I have a 55 Buick Super that I'm trying to prep for new window guts and glass but I can't get the door and window handles off. I read that there are C clips between the handles and the panel so I went and bought the tool to remove the C clip but still, nothin. There is a little beauty ring between the panel and handle that I can pry back with a screwdriver. I feel tension like there is a clip or spring but I can't see anything. I slipped the tool between the panel and handle, I can turn it all around but it doesn't do anything. What's the trick?
These handles are held on by a "C" type wire clip. This clip is flush with the door panel, and cannot be seen without a good space between the panel and the handle, and an inspection mirror. However, sliding the proper tool behind the handle itself, between the handle and door panel, will remove the clip in record time. I found this Kristen, but have never worked on one. Hope it helps.
if it is like a 567 chev or pontiac, the forks of the tool need to come in from the knob/lever side of the handle. there is a spring between the handle and the door that pushes the door panel out to the handle, you should be able to push the panel back enough to get a glimpse of the clip with a bright light. I think the clip should be behind the beauty ring
You may have to Falcon. If I bang on it any more, I'm gonna break something! I read exactly what you just found, that is what prompted me to go buy the "special" tool. Trouble is, it doesn't work! I can pry that ring back the width of a flathead turned sideways, at least a good 1/8 inch, I can see the post that connects to the handle but I see no C clip anywhere.
I resorted to cutting up the panels on my Plymouth wagon to get the handles off. I'm trying to save these to use as a template to make new ones. My car has the added frustration of having that nifty machined aluminum behind the door and wind wing handles. It doesn't like it when I try to slide that made in China crude looking clip tool behind that beauty ring! I'm at a loss though...may have to call for help!
maybe this will help, this pic is off ebay, looks like the slot for the clip is between the trim ring and the handle. also a pic of the correct tool. hope this helps
Seems like a clip on the outside of the door wouldn't do much good. Take the window and door handles off then the arm rest then the door panel off and there should be various holes in the door to get your hand and tool inside.

If there is a plastic escutcheon on it, you'll have to get the tool between the plastic and the handle. There should be a spring pushing the door panel out, that spring is around the crank mechanism behind the door panel, so you should be able to push the door panel in around the mechanism and see the shaft. The C clip will be lined up with the handle itself, so if you slide the tool behind the handle, it'll line up with it.
Yep, thats what they look like. I slid the tool between that ring and the door panel but it didn't connect with any clip. I'm assuming the plastic ring goes on the inside of the panel...
ok.. on the lower handle in the pic, you can see the groove where the clip should be, it looks to be right where the handle and trim ring meet...
I definitely feel pressure pushing the panel out. I have not tried pushing the panel back to reveal the clip though...I'll go try that...Thanks!
Thanks! I'm kinda stubborn though and thke this stuff personally! I want to beat it, I want to win Lemme try tomorrow and if I can't do it, I'll invite you over for a beer, or water, and you can show me.
it takes less than 2 seconds to remove those clips, i was gettin confused by those first few posts, lol chaddilac has the idea. its possible that the clip can be on 2 ways though it should be open toward the crank handle side push back the plastic protector behind the handle. slide the tool in perfectlly parralell to the crank arm toawrd the shaft where it connects. between the handle and the plastic keep the tool up close to the handle, not towards the door. as you push the c clip will come off, and likly spring across the garage never to be found again at this point the handle will just pull straignt off the shaft to reinstall slip the clip back in the slot, open toward the end of the crank. and push it on the shaft. it will click on and be done if you have chinese handles and c clips, your results will vary good luck, skull
I do not have that plastic protector behind the handle. Also, the door handle and wind wing handle attach over a stainless trim piece. The window handle is over the vinyl door panel. There is no give behind the door and wind wing handles. I'll try the tool behind there again but I have tried it to the point that I have scratched the trim to hell to no avail...I may not have tried all angles though so I'll try that. Thanks!
skinny screw driver may be the way to go.? feel around till you can feel the end of the c clip and push on it.
The clip will be located at the arrow in the pic. place the tool between the fancy trim ring and the handle, you may need to push it back a bit. It might also help to tweek the points on the tool that push the clip out a little. As in away from the door. As the others have stated, try behind the handle first, then try 180 from it. Something is kookoo with the pic uploader..........
