Although not as spectacular as some of the "after dark shots", I really dig this one. The signage, stonework, expansive glass and gravity defying "cantilevered" canopy scream Googie. If I lived anywhere within a few hundred miles, I'd be a cruise regular for sure!

Thanks for posting all the pix for us, Doug! Yes indeed, these are from John, especially since I'm not up and about yet, he took lots of pix during the opening so we could all get in on the action!

The Fat Boy's going up! I'm sending over a pic so you'll be able to see the huge framework and where we relocated him. He looks HUGE up close, very imposing. Analisa and I are thinking people will make special pilgrimages just to see him, like the Empire State Building!

Nice to see Jim happy, and seeing the Jeepster Kevin and I cruised around in one night is just great.

We're doing fine, some people keep taking trays as souveniers, at $32 a pop, it's getting pretty expensive. remember people, we take your licence # when an order is taken and the trays are marked to the spots- :).
We're experiencing the usual growing pains, but I'm impressed with our own HAMB contingent that comes out w/o fail and tips those "Hops" well and brings the place to life! Thanks, guys/dolls.

Why would you steal a tray? They look stuoid on cars at shows. The only time they are cool is when you are at a spot like the Broiler actually getting car hop service.

You should tell customers up front that there will be a $50 charge added to their bill if the trays are taken. That way if they skip out with the tray you can pursue them legally for skipping out on their bill.

Why do people steal anything? They do because they are low-life dirtball asshole punks that haven't had their heads bashed in enough times to knock some common sense into their tiny brains. :)D:mad:)

People will need to understand that this is a business, not a car show or their personal clubhouse.
I've said it before, but the reason that the car-hop places of my youth were closed down is because of loud radios, people milling around, drinking, littering, chirping their tires, taking too much time in a car-hop spot, and stealing. Believe me, when the neighbors start complaining or the cops start being called to come to Bob's, the car-hop service will be stopped...forever. I've seen it happen at Glendale, Van Nuys, and the Pasadena Bob's Big Boys when I was a teenager.
As with anything, it only takes a few to spoil everything for the many who are well behaved.
The dirtbags ruined it for us in the 60's. Lets not let them spoil it for us again.

Add gang fights, vandalism and graffiti to the list of reasons such places got shut down back in the old days. As for stealing trays, people will steal anything that's not nailed down. Anything. People pretend it's "just this one time," an "innocent" taking of something like a tray, or Coke glasses or root beer float mugs (all frequently stolen in the old days) and justify their stealing by saying "they'll never miss just this one." Pretty soon no more trays, no more Coke glasses, mugs, etc. and these same "innocent" people who stole "just one" item are mad that the place stops using that stuff. "I miss the old days when we got trays, Coke glasses, real glass mugs." Well, stop stealing it and maybe the place will start using that stuff again.

How about selling "souveniers" inside? Trays, mugs, coffee cups, etc? Might cut down on the thievery and provide additional income?

No offense, but isn't the point of stealing something the way to avoid paying for it?

  17. in this case I think people want a "piece of history"..................Hey Kevin did they build the case with all the original stuff in it like menus etc.?

Right now there is merchandise like Banks,Relish and stuff like that. We have to build up the collection up a little more. when it looks ready Jim will load it.

Thank you for your contribution of the menu. It will go in there one day soon. The case though is real "period" I think that you'd be stoked!

Was at Bob's yesterday. A couple of the guys from the museum arranged to have the Stone, Woods and Cook car there.
Nice turn out, but nothing like the pictures on this thread.
Did get the owners to break away from being really busy long enough to get a picture in front of the SWC.

  20. I think when people steal from a big business or gov. deal they think it is a victimless crime, and that makes it "ok" they don't realize that no matter what it is, from ash trays to stop signs, some one is going to pay for it, usually the tax payers or next customers, check on ebay sometime for "collectables" look at all the stuff that people are selling that someone stole from some place, even if they can get it in a gift store for some it is more fun to steal it.
Maybe cameras in the hop area would help or attach the tray to an old car rim like they do gas station restroom keys...

I hope your trays are not printed with a cool logo, this is why the bums steal them. Use plan old simple trays in an odd color and no one will want them. When the car hop takes there order have her write down their license plate number and make sure the driver sees her doing it.

I drove by to check out the demo when the place was razed and couldn't believe it...I used to have lunch with my co workers there and then it became that car lot...

I'm so glad to see this place is back, it will be high on the list of places to take my family once my car is back on the road!

Finally made it out, all the way from Northridge, for a gathering with my fellow Road Devils. Very impressed with the service, considering how busy it was, and the food was good to boot. Definitely making Bob's Broiler one of my preferred destinations when cruising in my '54.

Is there a schedule somewhere of any of the car shows being held at the broiler? I'm there every Wednesday night but seems I keep missing all the other shows :(
