Your welcome and thank you to all the other vets on this board. I was mostly influenced by my grandfather, a Korean war era vet. As for me, I served three years in the U.S. Army driving ammo trucks and low boys.

Happy veterans day to all vets, both past and present. It is our willingness to serve that makes this country so great.;)

  8. Thanks Scott for starting this thread, it's nice to see one that is so positive and in many cases touching, who would have thought there would be so many vets and active military on this one board... says a lot for the HAMBer group...

October 66' to September 68' US Army Fire direction and control for a host of "field tube" Artillery. I was a Radio Teletype Operator, that coordinated the line units firing the field artillery guns;.....that's one of the reasons my hearing isn't worth anything! Too much noise!

My Dad served in the navy during WWII. He was on a salvage and recovery ship in the Pacific picking up damaged ships and transporting japanese POWs to various islands. From his accounts it seemed like a charmed tour of duty. Exotic ports of call, drinking "torpedo jiuce" and passing out in a gun turret. No real action to speak of, although the threat of japanese subs was real.

Back then the Navy named their ships for various implements on the ship (ie, USS block and tackle, hoist, etc).

He remembers coming into port in San fran after the war and having to ID his name and ship to a female Navy person. She didn't think it was funny at all when he stated "ARS-27, USS Snatch".

I was fortunate to find one of his only remaining shipmates a few years back via the 'net, and he and my dad got together in Chicago for a few days.

I even had a nice embroidered ship's hat made for him, but he won't wear it. Guess I know why.

18 pages, Ryan if you were proud of the HAMB before this thread alone should transcend that pride. So many brothers in arms, it takes all to keep us safe.
Thanks guys, you who came before me, you who served with me and they who shall follow.
