Young Punk!!! How about Cokes for a dime, Dolly Madison Snack cakes that were one piece and shaped like a football. Selling pop bottles back to the grocery store for .02 a piece....5 empties=1 full one.

Very interesting observation, it's amazing how "in the dark" people were back then about the rest of the world. It's great to see the world becoming a smaller place!

  3. Yeah it's great alright.

  4. Young Punk, how about Cokes for a nickle? Candy bars were a nickle except for a "Gold Brick" a little tiny candy bar and it was a dime and Almond Joys and Mounds were a dime.

Do I notice a touch of sarcasm?:)
There were 2 candy bars in the little store in my town that sold for 3 cents, one was called a lunch bar, can't remember the name of the other. I used to stop at the store after school and pick one up (it was hard to decide which one to get). I'd just hold it up and ask Edith the store owner to put it on the bill. As long as I didn't go overboard my Mom and Dad were cool with it, that's why I always got the 3 cent bar rather than dropping a whole nickle on a mars bar or something. Jeez, I guess that's where I learned to be such a cheap old bastard!:D

Usually when you do see this today, it's in reference to the packaging. The box was made here :)

Funny you mention changing the rear bumpers out because a different dealer's name was on it.

In around 2002ish I worked at a Ford dealer locally and was in charge of dealer transfers. If we got a 1 ton truck in, we'd have to swap out the mud flaps that had the other dealer's name on them to a set of ours.

Needless to say all of my dad's ragged out Ford 1 ton duallys all had a nice shiney set of new mud flaps on 'em! LOL... all from random dealers across Texas in towns we'd never been to hahahaha.....

the other day i went to a gas station to get $50 worth of diesel in my truck,
they pump your fuel for you at this place, first guy takes the cap off and gets
the fuel going, he walks away, the second guy takes my $100 bill and goes
inside i never see him again, the third guy finishes pumping the fuel and goes
in and gets my change and receipt, if they ever blow a light bulb in the place they will have to call in some part time help, what a bunch of loosers...lol

I can remember standing up in the front seat of our 55 Buick Special as I aways did right next to mom when she was getting gas. The man was checking the oil and told her it was a quart low, she asked how much was a quart of oil, he said thirty nine cents. She told him no that was to much . Dad always bought oil on sale and he would put it in. I don't know why after all these years that moment of time has stuck with me but it has, we where at a Sinclair station on South Cobb Dr in Smyrna. , I can't remember to stop on the way home from work to get milk , but I remember that.

  17. When I was 16 I bought a 55 Chevy 2 door Belair Hardtop from a dealer in Charlotte, NC for $35. It was a six cylinder automatic, and the interior was rough, but it ran and drove.

    I miss those days....

  19. LOL,,,sorry guys, but I can't help but laugh. Damn, some of you are older than dirt and some were just born last night. I remember cokes costing 7 cents, but never a nickle. I remember moon pies and RC Cola, but not blue stamps

But mostly I remember how lucky we all are to born in the USA and be free to do what we want

Ok, back in the 50's my dad owned a Cities Service gas station (remember them). He started a gas war in town, price started out at 18.9 and gradually went down to 12.9.

  21. I nearly ran my '65 Pontiac out of gas trying to make it to Perry FL. They always had a gas war going on there and I was gonna get there hell or high water. I did on fumes. That was way before I-10.

  22. My Dad would load up the Station Wagon "FULL" of gas cans and a couple of us kids to take advatage of a "Gas War" and the lowest I've ever seen it was at 18.9 cents a gallon!!!

My Dad filled every single gas can, coffee can, mason jar and Milk bottle that would fit in the car!

Hell... my brother and I were sitting on his lap while he drove because the car was so full of containers while he was smoking a cigarette!!!

The day of $500 cars are just about gone. Now you can buy a '72 chevy longbed pickup with enough rust to build another rust bucket for two grand. Really great deal aint it.

Ha.. I'm not older than dirt, but close..... I remember that(1945 or so) at my Uncle Dee's station the Coke and Grapette bottles were a lot smaller than Dr Pepper, Orange, etc. , with the price being the same, so never did buy Coke or Grapette.:D

Every so often I come across a decent $500 car. Certainly nothing HAMB friendly but in the past couple years I found:

1971 Vista Cruiser for $100 that ran & drove perfect. Sold it on Ebay for $850 and the kid flew in and drove it back to LA. I saw it a few months later at Pomona with nice wheels, cleaned up and the kid wanted $1800 for it. When I saw it I was pissed because it cleaned up nice and looked cool.

1973 Pontiac Grand AM. Solid and it ran and drove and had cool old slots on it. Paid $400 sold it for $1000

1975 Pinto Wagon. Looked cool (for a Pinto), had brand new mag wheels & tires, I wanted to keep it for driving back & forth to work but it blew the head gasket so I sold it for the $500 I paid for it.

1968 Caprice. Bought it for $400 Ran and drove great, at one time it had a LOT of work done to it. Had a pearl paint job on it but one quarter panel was smashed. The rest of the car was beautiful. Sold it for $1000

That is just a few. There are a couple more but are even more un-HAMB friendly.

how about when your exhaust sounded like it had a hole in it,you fixed it, now these fart cans sound like it all the time, all it does is rattle my windows on the house. I will NEVER put one of those dam things on the import. Or when school buses didn't have seat belts, and a big bump meant you got to fly in the air, and sometimes the seat cushion would fly off it's frame. In northern Ohio where I grew up, the roads were so bad, every bus ride was like going to the amusement park. Another one you could walk into a garage and watch the mechanic work on cars ,as long as you didn't get in the way, now you can't get in the door because they are so scared of moronic lawsuits.
