The headers are definately not equal length by a long shot but I'm shooting for cool and not maximum performance. Also, strangely enough I am building this so 2 people can ride in it comfortably. It just seems like actually being able to enjoy driving it might be a bonus.:D

I do appreciate all the input, even from the guys that dont like the sbc. I am here to learn and to learn by building. Thanks for the motivation guys, I appreciate it!

aesthetically pleasing... sometimes function comes in second to form... deliciously different.

If you read the whole thread the reason for the SBC is $$$$$ or rather the lack thereof. I am sure that if you wanted to donate a hemi (or another interesting early engine) to the project he would willingly pull the small block out. Give the guy a break, most of us pay for silly stuff like the mortgage & groceries before we can spend money on car parts. He also stated that the car will likely receive a different engine later when the budget allows.

Ignore the SBC haters. Cool car, awesome build. When you do get another engine, a straight eight would get my vote.

Keep at it, soon you will be burning rubber & banging gears! [IMG]

Hate is a strong word. Most of us pay a mortage or rent, most of us still need to put beans on the table, and most of us have some skill at horse trading...
Personally, I simply find the sbc incredibly boring. There is little, or nothing, that you can do that hasn't been done a million times already. They are the easy way out, parts are on the shelf at Albertsons, but they are not the 'be-all, end-all' that some folks want to believe. They are not grossly cheaper to build than a sbm or sbf, they do not make an inordinate amount of power for the displacement.
Like some others on this board, I live in a nice little world where Fords are powered by Fords, GM by GM, and Mopars by Mopars.

Hate...if I put a 318 poly in a tri-5 then there would be plenty of hate showing its ugly face.
As I recall he asked for opinions and options, if that changes I'm sure he will say so.

This thing is too cool. I'm not a big fan of the SBC either, but I don't think the motor is gonna be the focal point of this rod!

Love what you're doing so far.
Run what ya got until you can run what ya want.
Another suggestion - You might want to consider a slant six for in-house different.

This strikes me as boring. I like coming up to a rod & seeing a nailhead, a hemi or an equally interesting engine in a car (or truck) regardless of the make of the car. I think the older engines are mechanically and aesthetically pleasing. pure art most of them.

This is the biggest reason I do not like or pay much attention to street rods, most of them have the same boring engine as the one on either side or worse yet, a cover over the entire engine so you cannot even tell what it is.

This you should do, it would have people who loved it & people who hated it but they would be talking about it. some people would think you were crazy but then again, aren't all of us that work on old cars all the time a little crazy? not really much different than a restorer thinking you "wreck" a model A when you chop it & put speed parts on the 4 banger. IMO not ruined, just improved.

That is what Racrdad has accomplished in addition to creating a cool car. he has a bunch of people talking about it. and in the end, it is his car to do with as he pleases. If he wanted to paint it pink & yellow with a green fuzzy fur interior because it made him happy, so be it. (Please don't do this, just an example:eek:) As it is now, I wait for updates patiently to see what he has done next.

I like the way you think Toner, but if he decides on pink & yellow with fuzzy green interior, I promise to hit him over the head with an intake until he gets that shit out of his head!!:D

X2 !!. Good words though, Toner. And while it is a sbc, at least with the headers , it now has a point of difference. Can't wait for more pics !!:)

  20. I know this option isn't on the radar, but I couldn't help myself tinkering a bit. Forgive the clumsy photoshoping -- I can only afford Windows Paint.

Anyway, you're doing a great job. Cool, inspiring stuff.

Well after what seems like a long time I finally have a bit of an update. Time to work on this project has been very hard to come by lately since I work in online retail and the last 2 months of the year are always crazy.
But with the new year here finally I will be getting some of my free time back again. So, here goes:

Headers are basically finished, need to smooth up a few places on them and weld the dumps into the collectors, then run the exhaust.

I have been watching for a cross ram intake for awhile. I really likes the looks and thought one would look good on this car. After talking about this with a good friend of mine he mentioned that he had one he traded for many years ago. He had never ran it on anything but was complete with carbs and linkage. I shouldnt have been surprised he had this, he has more parts stashed away than I have ever hoped to own in a lifetime. I asked him if I could borrow it for mock up to see if it was for sure what I was looking for. Well I definately liked the look. Well out of the blue he asked me if I wanted to take in trade for some parts I had bought for a rmutual race car project we had going on several years ago when I was drag racing alot. Heck Ya!!!! What a deal - what a guy - what else can I say?!?!

Also got the metal for the floors and tunnel done. Bought a sheet of 16 guage, marked out the floor supports, drilled holes to spot weld it in place, cut it to shape and here it is:

The trans tunnel was quite a bit more work since I dont own any equipment to roll any curves with. I bent this stuff over my leg, over some metal pipe, over the top of a skinny front tire, basically anything I could. The tunnel is built to allow maximum legroom so its a bit odd shaped but its done. It is actually 7 seperate pieces to make it.

So thats it for now. Still have family in town for the holidays but hopefully will get some work done tomorrow or Sunday. I am ready to get back at this on a more steady basis!

    Looking great!

The headers and intake really spruce up that engine for looks.

Yeah, that's cool, I'm an old fart and I really enjoy all the ideas the younger crowd brings to the rodding scene. Do you have an idea of the engine / trans setup you'll run? I'm keeping an eye on you! Happy New Year

Ran a cross ram on a 60 over 327 back in the day, 2- 500 Holley's with 12.5/1 and a 505 Isky made 430 HP. Was tough on the street with the 512's and cheater slicks. Mid 12's at OCIR in 1967!!! What a memory.
