Gambino mentioned (as some others) that it's a totally different scene but it's not. The guy's who are building cars (and vans) from this era are from THIS SCENE. It's the dudes from Road Dog Customs, Kennedy Bros. Dice Magazine, Chopper Dave (WCC) myself, etc. that are into this stuff NOT the guy's with the everyday Muscle car. And I'm not talking about standard muscle cars anyway, I'm talking about lace and flake and airbrushed panels and Cragars. Very similar and in step with the way traditional guys as well as dudes with Gassers are painting their rides. The Dice van fits right in when it's parked next to Gambino's cars or any other car at say the Primer Nats. People love to see it because it's fresh and exciting at a time when things are getting a little redundant and predictable.

life was good when the cut off was 48. That was the end of cars with fenders.

The '65 cutoff is fine with me, it keeps all of those other 'Johnny-come-lately' musclecars away. ;)

But who knows, a '64 Chevelle might sneak in (the horror!) or even a '64-1/2 Mustang!

It's bad enough that we have to wade through the Wanabillies and the Orca Betties
If they move the cut off to the early 70's, then we will have to deal with the freaks that will dress like these twits.

Its for the best, I seriously don't want 1000 mustangs and camaros anywhere. I was so pissed at the autorama last year!! Every other car was a camaro!

I don't think so. The 48 cut off date came about because it happened to coincide with the change over between round fender and shoebox styling.
Even with that there were guys who thought that fat fender cars didn't belong in with the older rods. But it was a good cut off date simply because it marked a big change in the design of American Automobiles.
In the early 70's one of our own petitioned the Lonestar Street Rod Association to allow in "grey line cars: Those from 49 to 54 that were done up in traditional custom modif. That didn't go over well at the time but there were many of us who agreed with the concept as those cars fitted in with the earlier rods and customs better than they did the "street machines.
The 55 and ups for the most part usually fit the "street machine" category better than they fit in with the early cars and people who have them. Yes there are many that fit in with the rest of us but there are a lot that don't. Often the hard core single brand, then Model and year groups don't fit in with the collective group of car nuts well.

Then we get to the magic year of 1964. The end of one American automotive era as we know it and the beginning of another. Prior to 1964 the majority of hot car guys were swapping engines, doing serious engine mods for the street or strip and having to make the car go faster any way they could figure out. Enter the era of the "super car" SS396, GTO, 390 Fairlaine GT, 442, 426 & 440 Mopars. Many with sub 14 second et's right out of the box for 1000 bucks or less down and 80 bucks a month. No busted Knuckles, no engine torn apart for weeks at a time while waiting for parts or machine work and at the time a great cool factor with the hot chicks in town. That's the reason for the 64 cutoff date.

I'm two days short of 63 years old and can well remember pressing my nose against the showroom windows on the local Pontiac dealership the first week that the new GTO's were out. For 80 bucks or so a month you had a brand new car that could run heads up with the built 55 Chev with 327, 2 fours and four speed that the guy at the Shell station had.

I might be called a snob in some sense of the word because I don't really care to attend many runs or shows with mid 60 and up cars in attendance. It's too much like walking through a used car lot for me and then when we get some of these shows put on by the local community club they are really open events and I'd swear that some of the locals go to Hertz and rent a new Mustang or Camaro to use for the weekend and enter the show with. At some of them even the big bock late 60's Mopars get crowded out by the even later stuff.

Hell, let your buddy ride shotgun for the day and participate that way. Next time you can ride with him to an event where his car fits in better and call it good.

right on!!!!! I like alot of 66-74 cars and trucks, but i also hate alot of 66-74 cars and trucks. I WOULDNT MIND SEEING A COOL VAN OR TWO.A 66 NOVA OR 67-72 CHEVELLE, OR EVEN A 69-70 BOSS MUSTANG. YOU WOULD HAVE EVERY TOM, DICK, OR MARY PULLING IN WITH JUNK WITHOUT A CUTOFF. I CAN SEE THAT SHIT IN OHIO, YOU GUYS ARE BETTER THAN THAT:D.

Bobcats need a '65 cutoff, too....

I guess I'd sooner drive a red '64 Renault Dauphine wearing used Tampons then drive around looking like THOSE guys....

Only up to '64 here on the hamb, and thankfully. Focus and editing is good. It gives a show an identity vs. just being a big car show for whatever. What about tractors and RV's? Should those be allowed too? How about a few airplanes and boats? I will take a smaller show with good focused quality for what I would like to see over more encompassing quantity any day.

I hate going to big shows with tons of cars I really am not into, even if they have 10-20 good ones here and there. But, I'll go to a small show with just 10-20 good cars and maybe just a couple not so any day.

I think they allow way too much as it is. here are some ideas.

    1) there is a lowrider show in any park in any city in Souther California any weekend of the year. Always the nicest salt of the earth people too, but who really needs to see more of them?
    2) no four doors of any year unless its a woodie.
    3) no grilles higher than cowls for any reason.
    4) no tires higher than trunks for any reason.
    5) no more than two skulls on any car for any reason (can be allowed in but extra skulls cost 10.00 each)
    6) no iron crosses on anything for any reason (again, can be allwoed in but cost 20.00 each unless its a tattoo, thats 100 bucks to enter)
    7) no fat chicks with umbrellas for any reason even an absolute emergency

Frankly 1965 is to late for me, but thats a personal preference i guess. But i think the true tradition is lost once you get into the 70"s, hell pretty soon projecting that theme ahead you will see new cars off the show room . This is a traditional site and i suspect most post here because of that. Why then post about stuff that doesnt even fall into that category. Sure surf vans were neat, and gassers had their day but its a far cry from what the soul of Hot Rodding is really about. Just my 02 cents

From what I understand hotrodding is about makin your stuff go faster than it should and then about personal expression this the exact deffiniton of vannin(sure we are not ammune to the guys who forget the go fast part but who is)just cause you cant see the engine dont assume it aint a hotrod.Alot of guys have fallen prey to the old its a bug it cant be a hotrod assumption linen' up next to me on thurs. nights out at Irwindale

My guess is that they want cars from '65 or earlier at their Christmas Party.

If you allow the stuff from the 70's, you'll end up with "pin-up" queens like this draped over the hood of an AMC Gremlin.

  29. Exactly what I think most of the time. I think you keep it the way it was way back lol with a pre-65 cutoff.-Weeks
