Yes there is, and yes I am...but I can't recall his traditional Hot Rod involvement. Off road motorcycling & circuit racing yes.....Hot rods...not so much
liked hearing him shift that mustang in bullitt... wind it till they float haha! i always heard he did the driving in that movie story i heard was that he told the stunt driver that he could do a certain scene better and the driver tossed him the helmet and told him to have at it.. he was fired before steve made it back with the car... didnt he do some kind of road racing before he was a movie star?
I'm working in Slater MO. Steve McQueen's boyhood home. He only stayed there 3 month at an uncles house though. They have a festival every year. The house is still standing he stayed in, but it's on gravel, and my cars are low, so I haven't checked it out. It's not a monument or even marked. They just made hwy 240 the Steve McQueen memorial hwy. Dean
Definitely one of the cooler Hollywood icons in my eye, at least he was a car guy. Here's one of his 'stealth' vehicles he used to drive. Not a true Hot rod but he used to drive it when he wanted to get out without all the Paparazzi getting in his face. Just sold at auction recently for $30,000+
Wow... I checked out for awhile... just came back. I see there are definetly some McQueen fans here. The Chevy truck is cool... I knew about that. Hey Stump, is that a pic of your 66? ( One of my favorite rides ).
most do not know that he was a national champoinship level of dirt motorcycle rider... and TRIALS rider..... this was way before there were such a thing as factory sponsored "works" or specially made bikes...... many that were actually there when they shot the film..."the great escape" actually say that his mechanic rode the bike when it went into the fence. I met him a few times at the old arco gas station /freeway ramp going to the willow springs racetrack....
I have heard that some guy in ky owns the bullit mustang. I also heard him called an excentric, wont sell it,wont let anyone even look at it???
The "mechanic" was Bud Eakins.........Bud also did the lay down scene in Bullit during the Chase with the Charger........Many Bud Eakins stories.........quite a person in his own right. M.
Although he never built or drove any 'hotrod' he did have Von Dutch build him a glovebox door for his XK-SS Jag after the original wouldn't stay in place. He also raced at Riverside in the '60s, probably came across a couple of guys named Doane Spencer and Mickey Thompson a few times. Best movie? Hmmm, that's a hard one. The Great Escape or Le Mans are his greatest, internationally speaking. www.imdb.com/name/nm0000537/mediaindex for 249 photos.
This picture alone makes this thread legitimate. You don't get more "traditional" than whats on his hip and boots! Obviously from when he was doing Wanted: Dead or Alive but I just went through 50 pages of image search and could not find this. It cracks me up--that look on his face??? It's like--what are you lookin at?? Don't know where you found this picture, LowKat, but that will be my new screensaver for awhile! Killer!
