This post and the little Anglia just reminded me of when I was a kid and my family started in speedway racing. There was a similar class called Supermodified which was pretty much anything goes. There was one of these Anglias with a really set back Ford V8 (unsure what kind). The driver sat in the back seat. It was called the Mustanglia. Must have been around 1970. Pete
The lycoming was at a local meet here in Invercargill recently, my son and the owners grandson knocked around in the pits together , great how kids that have never met before can become instant friends.... we could probally all learn something from them.
What a fantastic read! Just been reliving my life! Last time I saw the Lycoming was at a grass track meeting at Te Awamutu. There were only two cars in the (?) 4000cc class - the Lycoming and my old jag! Which was just back on the road after a massive rebuild. That I think was back in about 1965 or 6 I think. I can remember thinking that the Lycoming was going to make me look silly, but it didn't! All those other super modified cars - I want to go back! Cheers Alan
OOPS! The Te Awamutu meeting was the old Mermaid - what ever happened to that? Now where did I race against the Lycoming? Wish my memory was better!! Must be either Ardmore or Pukekohe at a rough guess. Can remember "bouncing" off the bottom corner at Pukekohe - that was in a Holden, probably a EH model - standard.
The Custaxie lives on! Passing through Christchurch Airport yesterday on the way back to Oz and picked up the excellent NZ Classic Driver Oct/Nov 2009 Issue #28 magazine... edited by Allan Dick (whose also involved with NZ Today and NZ Driver... the former is another excellent read)... and there on the front cover is a picture of a newly built Custaxie... Robbie the original driver involved and inside more of an article... it will be racing again in Jan 2010 at a couple of events in the Auckland area late in that month http://www.nzfmr.co.nz/info_pages.php/page/The Race Classes/pages_id/3 Invited 1960s Saloon & GTs There will be the return to the track of Robbie Francevic in his recreated 1967 NZ Saloon car Championship winning Custaxie 7000cc that he aptly titled Colour Me Gone. Add in the ex Clyde Collins A40 Fordina, the famous ex-Kerry Grant/Jim Mullins Austoin A40, some Anglias, Lotus Cortinas, Mini Coopers, Mustangs, Ferrari 275, Escorts, Mk3 Zephyr, Mk2 Zephyr Corvette, Alfas and there will be plenty for fans to fizz about. http://www.carmagreviews.co.nz/NonCms/Review.aspx?MagReview=683 http://www.hrscc.co.nz/TasmanRevival2010.pdf http://www.nzfmr.co.nz/pub/Newsletter-1-April2009.pdf Here's a link to the magazine ordering page... there should be a Silver Bristol on the front page and the white Custaxie in the bottom right hand corner with the the red and blue stripes. The new Custaxie will have the same sort of 427 engine and has been built from a partly restored 1955 Customline. http://www.mercurysubs.co.nz/shop/Cars/Classic/Classic+Driver.html Being Aussie we can subscribe to Classic Driver and some of the other mags at a premium to the NZ price. They also offer international subs albeit more expensive due to postage. THere is a place in Christchurch that will post new copies of magazines internationally. I'm waiting on their pricing to see if it's cheaper than subscribing direct. As all-comers virgin and not knowing of their existence until yesterday.... what a colourful class of racing this was and is. I'm not sure if the 2010 NZ Festival of Motor Racing is an annual event, on every 2 years or that this is just a one off? Also seen in my short NZ visit...the car museum just out of Wanaka. And a must do for next time in Invercargill.. the Bill Richardson truck museum. Not enought time to see this one but time enough to pick up from H&J Smith Invercargill a very stunning book on the museum titled "Trucks A Vintage Collection" Cheers John
Good grief! Don't know how I missed the rest of this thread and even more mystified as to how I found it again... I wonder if anyone found the Anglia near Governers Bay? Brian, I am originally from CHCH. Since 1982 I have travelled the world as a race team member and have been in the US since '94. Candlewood Isle is in New Fairfield, not too far from Darien. I know Scotty Dixon, worked with him a few years back, was at a dinner last night with his current team mate Dario Franchitti. I grew up reading about and seeing many of the vehicles mentioned here, I knew some of the players involved as well. Ruapuna was my weekend hangout as a kid, got to know many of the regulars by bugging them about anything and everything, something that is virtually impossible to do these days.
for MelbMan, the scene,Christchurch,1973/4,walked out the back of the service station workshop, the hour, aprox Midnight,to take a Pee!!! (otherwise you explode!!) We,thats my buddy Greg Fitzgibbon (Whom's Dad owned the 'servo')had been agonising over a name for the new 'Altered'Drag Car that 'Fitzy' was building,I was up for paint and graphics (no vynal in those days !!) the last Show car that Greg had built was ,owing to its 'orange Metalflake' paint, named 'VODKA and ORANGE' Feeling much relieved I stroll back into the workshop with the 'thought process'in top gear!!! "Hey Fitz's!!! why dont we call the altered the,(Wait fot it) ,the 'BOURBAN BANDIT',I just counted 4 high by 30 or so across, two deep from the wall Jim Beam Bottles, that would be (I had had time to work this out!!)240 25once bottles,SHIT!! think how much 'Coke we must've pinched from your Dad's shop fridge"??? Jim Beam -No Job should be without it,the working Man's Brew!!!!!!!!!!! The 'Bourban Bandit' she became, Red /White/Blue American flag paint schemme with a large glass of Jim Beam (With ICE!!) on each door, eventually got on the cover of NZ HoT Rod Magazine MelbMan, NZ alone put 'Jim Beam' on the Map or at least 'WE' gave it a go!!!
Second story!!!!! The scene,Christchurch 1967/68 Walked into work early Monday morning to find the Advertising Manager quite worked up about something, something regarding his Peugeot. "Smyles, you know about cars don't you"????? "Well I'm not sure what you want to know, please tell me"!!!!!!! "Well, last night driving back from my Skiing weekend (early Yuppie!!) in my 403 Peugeot (practising Volvo driver) I was cruzing at about 60MPH,on the Eyrewell State Forest Highway when I came across a line of about 6 cars, not wishing to be home late I changed down to third gear and pulled out to pass,I double checked my rear view mirror only to see this Green Ford Anglia sitting on my Bumper as I indicated my intentions, well I motored up to about 80mph,passed the 6cars,pulled back in and this 'cheeky' mongriel pulls along side and selects 4th gear and just 'Blasts off into the distance, didn't know those Anglia's went that well ??!!!!!!!!!!!! "David, did the Anglia have big 'W I D E' tyres with front wheels that hung out of the front guards at about 45degrees by any chance"???!!!!!!!! "Yes,it did actually,.........do you know this car"?????????????? "WEll,David that would have been Niel Doyle On his way home from the 'Hill Climb' that he would have competed at on Sunday prior to when you saw him and don't worry your investment in your Peugeot is still 'Good Value'for your money, that Anglia has a Chev/Corvette engine and 4speed gearbox 'shoe horned' into it and its real quick, especially in a straight line, considering the 'State forrest' highway is 50miles of straight road he was probably home before you "!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Thunder427.... slowly coming up to speed with NZ with about 4 issues of Classic Driver found as well as NZ Today which Allan Dick also is the main force behind. So the Anglia with the Corvette engine (how did they manage that )... did it have a name? How about "Angette" or the "Coranglia". That would be a good rhyme for the Custaxie. No sign (yet) of Custaxie Mk 2 on You Tube... but here's a bit of modern All Comer You Tube action http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RV2A1fccdak Enjoy! Cheers John
Yes Mark you are correct there, the car was photographed for classic car, a special edition which was published i think around '05, My father purchased the car less motor in '82 i think (not sure exact year, was before my time). It will appear on Trademe/Australian ebay in a short while, couple months at the most. If you're curious i am happy to answer questions, but only to the best of my own knowledge. I hope to see this car go to a good owner who will do a nice job of restoring it and giving it track time. Would love to see this car in action.
So do you own Miss Victorious? I think the purchaser of this car would have a tough decision to make. Its still in its original livery, from its 1977 racing season where it won the second of its two NZ championships. Its an absolute timewarp. Do you keep it as is as a fully original car, warts and all, and loads of character, but possibly not be able to race it. Or do you restore it, stripping off the original paint and signwriting?
Yes it is in my possession. I agree, it'd be interesting to see what happens with this car. It still has the original thank you note on the boot with the stone brother's name. Maybe that'd be kept original. Who knows.
Another Anglia 'breadvan'........ There is talk of Neil Dolye on here , he lives above Mayfield ,Ashburton ,still farming.
Thats the old Paul Fahey Lotus Anglia. It finished second in the 1966 championship behind Dave Simpsons similar car. How it survived is one of motorsports great misteries. Those cars were worthless after the Allcomers were shut down. Their mechanicals was where their value was, and they were usually stripped of all important items then the bodies dumped. Though a few did live on in the South Island when OSCA was formed.
Wow, that is amazing. For so many years the general thought was that the car had been stripped of its valueable F5000 gear and the body turned into a chicken coop. Thats what Allan Dick wrote several times. Then when NZ Classic Car did the Nazer feature and ran the photos of the car as it is today, a lot of people were amazed. Its just an incredible original car. George Shewiery, who owns the Jim Richards Sidchrome Mustang has kept that car in almost the same condition. Do you have many photos from that period of racing? I write a lot of historical articles for NZ Classic Car and Aussie Muscle Car and photos are always a challenge to find.
Way Kewl. Morrari. The second shots show the Borrani wire wheels better. Thanks for the narrative too.
As far as i know the motor is the only piece missing, but it'd still be a big project getting it back up and running. I suppose Allan wrote those things cause he was certain they were true. The thing was my father didn't want people hassling him about the car wanting to buy it off him, he was given an offer once which was indeed a more than reasonable offer at the time, but wasn't high enough to break the emotional bond my father had with the car, so, it was denied. I have a CD which has a number of photos of that car and its many forms, but i'm sure they've been used before in the NZ Classic Car magazine, but would gladly upload them when i find the time.
When I last talked to Jack he said he still had a few parts from the car, I think the fuel injection ( but not 100% sure), it was a few years ago now, so it would be worth getting hold of Jack for whoever buys the car as he also has some great photos and memorabilia relating to the car that he showed me.
Well i knew he/the stone brothers (not sure which) kept the motor and related parts to that. still have the gearbox with the car, and a few of the flares and i think the whole exhaust system is in the boot .
Well I really hope it goes to a good home. I'm sure it will. In many ways, your father probabaly saved the car. During the 80s people weren't interested in recent history, and cars were cut up and butchered regularly for parts, or modified to keep pace with the competition. Your car is perfectly preserved. Thats a great thing.
Thanx Steve 38- Being a good aussie I hate saying how cool this thread is. It's revealing & way cool stuff. Now I've gotta draw that Anglia koncept !
Wow...I remember going to Renwick with my Dad when I was pretty young, the only thing that still sticks in my mind is Johnny Miller losing the Renault at speed and ending up against a pole....Don`t forget a few of those early cars were Beach Raced as well. Hope a few of you have Mike Stephens excellent book on the Tahuna Beach Races....also went to Wigram in 69, saw the Hot Rod Show too....
I have the photos from when it was in the classic car magazine on cd. It looks no different now, just tires are deflated. Will post an image or two up tomorrow.
