Would be cool to just get the boat in there so that triangle does not counter the shape of the cap.

These would be cool too with a full chromed wheel.

Well I would have not spoke up unless you asked us if that makes sense on the caps that are on there right now. But now that you have shed light on them, I feel like they are distracting from the work that has been done on the car. It's like they are almost too flashy which draws your eye to them first.

I hate to site this car only because I do not want to distract from your own work but it has set the bar so here it is...

This car's wheel cover choice is something that is completely left field and not expected but simple. I think they are off a Rolls Royce with a Ford Steering wheel center. I don't think that there could have been a better choice to show off the work that has been accomplished on this car all while keeping it simple.

You are building a late 40's styled car which is not as loud as let's say a mid 50's custom and certainly a far cry from a 60's custom. So the object I would say is to omit anything that does not carry the eye through out the car. You want a viewer to see the car as something very fluid like that conveys some movement. The caps that are on there right now are awesome, but my eye stops right there before I even get to the rest of the car. It's more poodle skirts and milk shakes and it needs to be more leather jacket and gin. I know that make no sense at all but I am leaving it:D:D:D.

Another thing is that your are building a Plymouth. Not a ford so right out the gate you have set you self apart from the crowd. From there on out you can use tried and true ideas from cars like the Calorie coupe and such and you are still not exactly like the rest. Same sport just a different ballpark you feel me? So look hard at the Westergard customs of the 40's and cars like the same style and run with some their ideas.

But the good thing is that the car is spot on thus far and we are talking wheel covers, and those can always be swapped out and changed around. Have your friends bring over one of each wheel cover that they own and try a bunch of different ones.

For what it's worth though, I am liking the '52 Merc idea too!

thats what i wanted to hear, kinda a reason i brought up the caps because i wasnt sure it was the right caps for it. i do like the merc caps alot and may go that route. kirk hammets car is amazing! cole really has a eye and is one of the guys i really look upto. ill be honest, that car is #1 for me. so extreme but you cant see it unless you know what your looking at. i had the pleasure to talk to cole for about 30 min. on the phone and i gotta say that guy is rad! well enough of that sorry. i definetly agree with you and im definetly gonna do some research. thanks alot for the help and thoughts. it means alot to me.

If you want to try something a little different, why not try either 1954-1954 Cadillac caps (slightly later, but still totally rad. Very simple design) or aftermarket '47-'52 Cad sombreros?

They're still sombrero-like, but they have clips all around the edge, so they'll fit any 15-inch wheel--and they're usually easier to find and cheaper than regular sombreros. Plus, you don't have to weld on a trim ring to get them to fit.

Just a thought. Car looks super bitchen. Congratulations.

ok let me ask this also, i have a chance at purchasing a set of og fox craft skirts or should i run standard tear drops? the only thing i didnt like about the fox craft was the lip and raised area at the bottom of the skirt but at the same time i do like it, kinda a love hate thing. ill put one on and maybe you guys can help me decide.

    Outstanding work, as usual!

I have to say that I am more often than not partial to a Foxcraft skirt. After seeing the car in person, I'd have to say to stick with the tear drops.

In my book, nothing beats the flat on the ground look.

I think the skirt thing really could go either way. What color are you planning for this???? If it were black the lip would be interesting and would not garner too much attention which is good but if it were a light color it would be one of those things that the eye could get caught on. Do you have a pic of the ones in question???

I would definitely not put too much thought into it seeing how the car is "there" already. If you love them run 'em but if not the ones that you have are beautiful so they will work just as well if not better.

What I want to know is what's the interior and gauge cluster going to look like???

I have always wanted to see a center mounted '39 Cadillac Sweep style gauge cluster in a Westergard custom with the chromse spears picking up where the cluste leaves off. MMmmmmmm tasty.

What an awesome build, Skoty, thanks for sharing all of it with us.
I can't believe I had missed your thread up to now, but I sure will be following your progress now...make sure you keep the updates coming.
You've got real nice lines and proportions going, keep up th enice job!

  18. I think most of the caps being suggested are too new if you are aiming for the '40's Westergard look. They need to be super simple like a single bar flipper cap or something like the ones JefferyJames posted in post #207. As for the skirts what you have now!

i put a set of 52 kaiser caps on and they look nice, ill post a pic later. i do plan on painting the car black. i guess if im not that stoked on those skirts i guess i shouldnt run them. the skirts on the car now i think are to flat. im probably gonna end up with tear drop bubble skirts. i havent really got to the dash yet but soon. i still need to round the door top corners, round the trunk to follow the bead line on the back and start my grill. i got so much planned but it all takes time to do nicely. thank you everybody for your inspiring comments. ill post pics of the caps soon.

With all the nice work going on I see no reason you couldn't fab up some nice bubble skirts...
And call me crazy, but I like the caps you've got on it. Even though they "seem" common, I just don't see 'em often, especially on a custom like this....

    I think I'm going to start looking for a mid's '30's Mopar...haha!!

Well, to be honest this is not going to be a spot on Westergard custom. We are passed that with the air ride and engine etc. It however can take cues from that era as to keep it simple and pay homage to those sinister looking customs. So your right the 52 caps would not work on say a car that Zach Suhr would build, but for car that takes inspiration from early customs it's simplistic design definitely lends itself to this car. The single bar flippers are just a good safe choice too!

Man, I am excited to see this thing in black. As far as the skirts go, the bubbles would be cool but flat ones are certainly rad too!! Here is a '36 Ford with flush mounted flat skirts...

    Here is another...

But then there is John Fisher's '36 which I believe to be a correct car. Correct in traditional early customs???? Probably but I am no expert. It's correct because the stance and everything else is perfect. Love this one and it looks like it has bubble skirts...

In fact take a look at Rikster's site featuring many early customs..

    http://public.fotki.com/Rikster/11_..._i_like/ford_custom_cars/36_ford_custom_cars/

I think your right. Make a set of each and sell the ones you don't want. If I had the talent like you I would!!!

And as for looking for a mid 30's Mopar, I have a feeling once this car is finished we all will be.

  22. That's cool. I do find it neat how all of the above cars have the single flipper caps. :D Are you guys putting a hood and hood sides on it?

    Skoty,

The car is looking killer. Good work.

I've got a NOS pair of '52 Merc caps that i found at an estate sale-- you're welcome to borrow them to see how they look. Consider 'em yours if they work out.

Maybe Mikey can bring 'em up from San Joseor something. Lemme know if you're interested. If you dont have it, you can get my number from Alex or hit me up via the HAMB.

Look forward to seeing progress on this rad Plymouth....

  24. The headlights can go either way. The flat skirts flow with the rest of the car, I think bubble skirts would take away from the smooth look it has now....

Whatever you decide, this is a killer build!!!

Wow, just came across this. Really excellent work. I would love to see some detailed pics of stretching the doors. That's a really sneaky modification. Had you not posted anything, I wouldn't have known. The car has excellent proportions... nice job.

Man....after seeing the above cars, ya GOTTA go with the bubble skirts, right?
Those curvy fenders look so much better without flat stock covering the rear tires....

    Jon Fisher's '36 may be my favorite '36 3W ever though.....so I'm biased...haha.

If we're voting on the skirts, in the "Do as I say, not as I do" dept: I've got flat skirts for my own '38 Mopar- but I think the bubbles look better.
