That's a badasss sound, but I got a question for the drag guys: I've always wondered why do they point the exhaust at the tires on those things? I mean, I can understand that adding heat to the tires is good, but it seems like it would also add oily residue to them, especially if they drop a cylinder at the wrong moment, and I'd think that would be a bad thing. So why do they all do it?

Yeah, that thing is sick!

 

Exhaust should not point directly at the tires but, over them. At speed it aids downforce and areodynamics. When a motor melts a piston, the 'goo' would go over the tires, not on them.

Hope that answers your quesiton.

Agreeing with applekrate; Today's top fuel dragsters' zoomies produce enormous down-force at the rear axle, but in the early days when the driver was between the slicks the zoomies angle was changed from "weed cutters" and aimed at the smoke coming off the tops of the tires to clear it for a bit more driver visibility. Before modern clutches, wheel-spin was the only way to get the dragster moving while getting the continuously increasing torque to the ground.
