Started work on the headers today. Some time ago,I got this header kit from Duksville Speed Shop(thanks Paul). The cones are 30 inches long.I wanted to extend them as I'm running them along the frame rails........ so I got these table legs(!) from a local D.I.Y. store.Stole the idea from an issue of Custom Car Magazine a couple months back. Once trimmed and tack welded,I had 42 inch cones. Here's a couple of pics to give an idea of what I'm planning. Cheers, Mark
Charlie, Mark seems to have a bit of a thing about sheep, I think he is repressing something! Mark, Those headers are gonna look as trick as buggery! Nick.
Mark are thoes table legs stainless steel or plated mild steel, I've been thinking of using them myself. Kelvin
Kelvin, they're coated mild steel but are also available in stainless. My ones were £13.99 if I remember correctly.Got them from B&Q.Ran down there as soon as I'd read the article in CC. Got a £5 discount on one as the plastic foot was missing.Top tip, unscrew the foot and throw it behind the shelving and blag a discount!LOL
Well shit man, As Nick once said, "How The Bloody Hell did I miss this thread" Jeez man, you are building an awesome RPU, sorry I haven't been watching this closer, I'm an Idiot. I like all you've done so far, It's freaking sweet man. I'm thinking of doing all interior stuff with steel instead of wood, I like the way it turned out. Been thinking about that for a while now. Just wondering if Nick lives close to you or did you guys meet here on the board?
Thanks Grits, glad you like it. Me and Nick live a fair distance apart and have never met face to face.Hoping to put that right at the 'Hot Rod Hayride' next year.We actually met on here. He's one of those guys you speak to once and it's like you've known him for years, great guy,but don't let the 'sheep-shaggin' bastard know I said that!LOL THANKS SLIM.More updates to come soon,I hope.First need to get some more mandrel bends for the headers. Most of the first batch are in the scrap bin!
Know what you mean about feeling like you've know some one all your life, I've the pleasure of meeting several here and I feel the same way about them and you as well, too baaaaaaad (sheep reference) we don't live closer to each other, I'm a good swimmer, but not to good on the endurance/ longevity part. Have a great Thanks Giving weekend.
MARK...i agree you do great work, just wondering how folks keep stealing OUR old cars! HA! i don't steal your bloody sheep. the next time 1 of you euro's takes just 1 more coupe from the U.S.A. i'll mail order 50 000 000 sheep. man i'am not kidding, or i'll nuke your freaking kilt mfg. O.K. i went to far. your new friend...POP.
Grits, thanks.hope you have a great Thanksgiving weekend. Not a holiday for us,work as normal. I reckon if you spent less time pissing about with your avatar, you'd have your coup finished by now!LOL Pop,thanks for the compliments!Just to let you know,I'll be stealing your old cars for as long as I'm still breathing! Nick, you probably owe me more than one!LOL Thanks all, Mark.
Love what you are doing! And really love the fact you are using a 289!! I've been playing around with different options for mounting my 289 in my frame ( using different styles of stock mounts), and after seeing your mounts with the engine in the frame, I have pretty much decided to go the same route as you. You wouldn't happen to have the pattern to the mounts that you would be willing to share do you? Just wondering. I could come up with my own of course.
Thanks Hot Turkey and 29 bones, much appreciated. Kramer,no probs.Don't know if I still have the drawings for the mounts,I'll see if I can dig them out.If not,I'll take some measurements for you.Give me a couple of days to sort it.I'll PM you when I have the details. Cheers, Mark.
Thanks 'Preacher',appreciated. This evening is the first I've worked on the car since my last post, apart from looking at it and scratching my head! This is my first time building headers. After scouring the HAMB(VIVA LA HAMB!) for header ideas,I decided to go with a tri-y type set up.This means I only have two pipes sticking out the hood sides for a,hopefully, cleaner look.I've kept the pipes quite tight to the top of the frame rail so,I should get away with two small notches cut into the bottom of the hood sides. Not finished yet but these pics should give an idea of where I'm going as far as the headers/hood are concerned; Cheers all, Mark.
Your headers are going to look great. After seeing the first shot of your headers showing the engine mounts just affirms my decision to use those mounts. I like the idea of the spacers to get the engine a little higher. Mine will be lower using your mounts than it is now with the stock type mounts that are in it at this time. I was thinking the engine needed to be lower, but after installing the new mounts If I want it raise it back up some I can use spacers as you have. Thanks for the pictures.
Nick and Kramer, thanks guys,I'm pretty pleased at how the headers are coming.Slow progress but I think they're worth the effort, and the piles of tubing in the scrap bin!LOL! Kramer,I used the spacers in there with slightly longer bolts to fine tune the tailshaft angle.Dead easy with those style mounts. Cheers, Mark.
Thanks Grits.Hopefully get some more done this week.Been really busy with work lately(shouldn't complain) so,working on the car when I can.Must say, your fire-up video gave me a kick up the ass! Mark
Hey Mark H I've been wanting to open this post all day, glad I did! Nice details and your plan & progress is great stuff! Reading thru the posts make me seem like the one of overseas hamb fellas...keep goin!
Mark, things are really looking good. Wondering about the firewall........i used a half a garden wheel barrow for mine to get away from a square box look. Mentioned it just for a option for ya on the cheap. Pic is best i can find of out side and in
