I wonder how they attached that front end on that 65?!! It must have been fairly light weight the way they are holding it.The engine sits out beyond the frame ends.If you look at some of the 65's you can see they have the fiberglass fender extensions.I wonder who made the fiberglass pieces for Mercury back then, there were a lot of pieces you don't see now. excellent question. did anyone ever make a complete flip nose for the 64's? i couldnt find a one piece for mine, so last week i bit the bullet and ordered the fenders and bubble hood from crites and am just gonna glass it together and support the snot out of it for my flip front end.

There is a third one ordered by Jimmy Pflueger of Pflueger Lincoln Mercury in Honolulu.Driven by Shrewsberry for one month, then driven by Earl Char.It is now in Illinois. The sister car,a Cyclone, is now in Utah.

in 1965, a small lincoln mercury dealer in hampton va. called spencer motors campaigned one of these comets in the af/x category. dealership was sold to a multi franchise and the car disappeared. white car, red interior , bubble hood. always wondered what happened to that comet. anyone remember seeing it? had spencer motors written on quarter panels as i remember.

Ken;it looks to be an NHRA SS/N,out of division 1.It would be a 210HP,289,4-speed,can't read the name on the door.I think it may be an older photo because the Comets are in SS/M now. ROY.

Why was the hard top the preferred body when it came to comets? Usually the 2 dr sedan is the one.

A post just doesn't have the lines of a hardtop.

The 2 cars that look like they are moving when when they are sitting still....a 64-65 Comet hardtop and a 62 Chevy bubbletop.

  18. Here's my Cyclone that I sold a few years back to a guy in Pittsburg. Original wimbelton white, red bucket, 4speed, 9 inch car. 30K original miles, original chrome, glass, trim, interior and crash-free sheet metal. Still had the super rare 3 spoke steering wheel with no cracks, and dash mounted tach w/Mercury head logo. I added the Crites hood and glass bumper. The rear wheel houses were "releaved" at the seams to fit 275/60-15 M&H DOT slicks.

It's my understanding that this car was street raced a lot back in the late sixties in the Dearborn area with a BOSS 302 under the hood but I couldn't see the evidence that that mill was ever in the car. Ah, legends.

I asked the owner at the Hot Rod Renunion in Kentucky if he was going to make any runs in it, and he said it was "just for show" :(

Weight was always the number one factor, the sedan usually is lighter than the hard top. I believe the belair ht was lighter that the sedan and the impala.
Thunder bolts were all based on sedans for example.

Im building a 65 sedan just for that reason, They are about 400 lbs lighter and the roof aids in body stiffness. I draged race a 65 hardtop in highschool and the roof flex was unreal.....

I think your 400 lbs is a little off.I raced Stock Eliminator for many years and my 65 Caliente hardtop was 2985,289,4-speed,had to weigh it almost every time we raced. That would make a sedan 2585,ain't gonna happen! My 65 now weighs 2850 with a mild steel 8 point bar, back halfed,Crites fenders, hood and front bumper[which are not that light].I do agree that the sedans are stiffer stock than a hardtop, both styles have a great look! I have a '65 Cyclone. From memory, the title says 2939 lbs. I think it weighs less already and will weigh even less when I'm done with it. IMHO the hard top roof line is one of the sleekest of the '60's cars. This is a street car so not too concerned about structural rigidity for racing. Don

These pictures were taken at George Ray's in 2007, not by me. I found them on a GR message board, and I don't know who took them. I've never seen it, and it looks like I won't be seeing it run at GR's.
Who owns this car, and where is it based?

The WalkerMotors Comet was driven by "Ohio" George Montgomery; Premier Motors was Jim Howard's ride; George Weiler drove the Tom Masano Motors car; Tom Coward was the driver. Others of the 21 hardtops were--Tom Sturm #843 Jardine headers car, Ed Rachanski-Marauders-Chicagoland L-M; Bill McDuell in "Ultimate"; Jess Woodman in Laughlin-Miles Mercury; Ron Riley in McCoy Mercury of Rising Sun, Maryland; Yankee L-M in Seattle; Rich Morley in southern New Jersey. Do you know who drove the #790 Comet with Bill Stroppe signage on the door at the '64 W-nats?
