Pics of different styles of old engines

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Desoto291Hemi, Nov 28, 2009.

  1. Hey guys,
Post some pics of engines we don't see very much anymore.
Nailhead, flathead, and others a lot of young guys haven't seen.
Any kind will do,,,all engines are welcome.
Buick,Olds,Pontiac,,,and of course all the usual brands Mopar, Ford, Chevy.
I saw an old Indy Westlake engine in a rod not long ago,,very cool.
I didn't mention all the styles,,,(I don't know them all).
It might give some young guys ideas for something different.
I think it would be interesting.
[By the way,,,please tell what it is and give the style of engine.

    Tommy

  2. OK
    I'll start I guess.

Pretty dirty and not much to look at.

Olds 394. Pure drag motor as can be seen by the loop where the water pump should be. Sheet metal manifolds with separate plenums, oil filter delete.

Note the angle on the carb pads. This engine will need to be run pretty steep angle to keep the carbs flat. Once inside I'll just about bet that the oil pickup is clear at the back of the pan.

As a comparison and it is a little hard to tell the carb pad on this 440 Dodge is @ about 3 degrees. The measured angles on the olds motor is nearly 10 degrees. It looks a little more extreme because the front of the olds is drooped a bit on the stand but I did measure both for my own peace of mind.

The Olds mill was built by an Olds racer in the early to mid '60s.

Not really a "hot rod" engine, but this is a 1931 Cadillac V-16.

This one is a 1961 Buick 401 Nailhead V-8. Good engine with gobs of torque and well suited for narrow spaces. RPM's kind of limited due to the relatively small valve diameter.

  13. One of the things that some of the fellas used to to was byp*** the oil filter. I'm not sure if it saved weight or made it easier to fit in a small ch***is or all of the above.

This mill has a by-p*** on the drivers side. I'll see if I can snag a pic of it its in my office here. The isn't even a provision on this particular motor for a remote filter.

Anyway the thinking on it was the oil filter wasn't important as you changed the oil every week anyway. Actually in the case of a lot of injected cars and alchy burners they run so fat that they always fouled the oil and it had to changed oil between rounds.

This is where the original filteradapter would have been on the 394. What this is, is the oil pressure by p*** from an earlier engine. You need a by p*** especially on an engine that turns up a few revs to control oil pressure. If not you build too much pressure and you do one or both of two things. You start blowing gaskets and if you get up over about 110 PSI you start washing the babbit of the mains.

  14. Tagman,,they don't "have to be a hot rod Engine",,but it helps.
Beautiful Caddy engine ,,V16,,first one I ever saw.
The Nailhead is beautiful as well,,I have never seen one in person,,only on the Hamb.
Man I get nervous just looking at all of these old engines,,,it is an addiction!

Please guys,,keep them coming,,for me and the other younger guys here.
    Docwatson,,,,keep those beauties coming.

Hey I worked on plenty of those Reo Gold Comets when I was in the Army. Good motors. I may as well put up an old Plymouth or two. You must have seen them before.
