Anyone in the Portland Oregon area know if/where I can rent a media blaster or know where I can have my frame and inside of the body blasted for fairly cheap. One guy quoted me $600, I could buy a blaster and a new compressor for that kind of money!
hey,buy the blaster and comp.,i spent 10 k on my set up,but its powered by a 6 cylinder ford, you sure sand blasting is what ya want?,media dont touch rust that great,,,
spend the money....a cheap blaster and compressor is just that , think about the cost of the blasting material , time , electric , m***ive cleanup , etc... if you any serious rust it will be hard to get clean with a small at home set-up .. i have a professional stripper do my work for me and it works out to be cost effective ..used to do it myself , 7hp comp , pressure pot type blaster , course black beauty media , takes alot of effort,,,, good luck GREAZY HUBCAPZ CC
M***ive clean up is an understatement, if you dont have a booth, that **** goes every where. I sugest you pay the piper and forget about doing it yourself. I did some blasting in my drive way with the black diamond stuff and It took forever to get it cleaned up, even with the helmet on it was in my hair, nose, ears and of other places I wont mention.
Thanks for the advice guys. I didn't think it would be that big of a deal but then again, I've never blasted anything before.
the blaster you buy and compressor you buy for 600. wont blast ****, the equipment needed to do a frame is expensive, also it does take considerable time, its not a wipe rust away thing, it actually takes a man time to clean every inch of that frame. That being said, pricing is also based on supply and demand and I dont know how many guys you have up there doing it, obviously not a bunch or you wouldnt be asking here. Around here, Houston area with a lot of compe***ion, we blast and coat single color an average frame for 450-500. Up there might be more expensive due to lack of facilities doing it, but really, 600 for frame and body interior, not to bad, might take him 4-6 hours or more to do, plus materials, labor etc etc
You may not be able to even buy media before long..............As a side note: I went to get some blasting sand the other day for my sand blaster and the guy I buy it from has quit selling it.He said the EPA is down on them because of the hazardous nature of breathing the dust. So,just another example of the government getting into your personal business and destroying your lifestyle. I know the hazards of the stuff. Its my decision, not some bureaucrat's. I WILL remember in 2010 election cycle.
called a place yesterday, called Media Blasters. On S.E. 82nd and Woodstock area. Quoted me 200-300 bucks to do a t-bucket style body. That doesn't seem too bad of a price to me. That is using walnut shells though, don't know if thats abrasive enough for your frame.
I just had my 40 frame and two rear fenders done with plastic media. All came out real well...$300.00 for everything. Murph
I had my 56' T-Bird blasted with plastic media, it cost $1000. and it looked like ****. So I bought a 7 hp.- 80 gal. comp. and a pressure blasting set up and reblasted it. I recently bead blasted my Shoebox coupe and all the misc. parts. I use a combo aluminum oxide and gl*** bead, yes it's messy and yes it's alot of work, but the results are very good. All rust, bondo, etc. is removed leaving only shiney 60 year old steel. The compressor is perfect for painting also. BTW for the uninitiated, blasting with sand produces silica dust, prolonged breathing of it causes Silicosis which can kill you.
And I love to come here to tell those that are not paying attention what is going on all around them.
On behalf of all of us that aren't paying attention, thank you. I know I'll sleep better tonight knowin' you are on top of it.
56don, Where were you buying yours? I last bought mine at the old monument place by Maple Hill cemetery. Cost me about $10 for 100 # bags and I need 10 bags now. tnrotter
I learned the hard way, hard to believe over 30 years ago. Was using a Sears siphon blaster on the underside of an early Mustang decklid and I got it super clean, every bit of paint and sealer was gone. The bad news is when I flipped it over I discovered that I warped the piss out of it. JUNK. Fortunately that wasn't a hard item to replace. tnrotter
So.... 1) How much for the compressor? 2) How much for the blaster? 3) How much for the combo oxide and gl*** bead to complete one car? Just trying to figure out total cost compared to having someone do it for me.
Yeah, thats where I was getting mine too.He won't sell it anymore.Guess I will have to take my stuff to Wallace Blasting or get some other media to use.
If you are doing one car and having it painted by someone else you would be better off having someone else strip it. I do all my painting and stripping, I've just finished painting my second project and have 3 more to blast and paint so it becomes very cost effective. To media blast you need clean dry air and an enclcosed area so you can gather and reuse your media over and over. The setup I have cost about the same as what I paid to have someone else do it. If you already have a large comp. the actual media blast unit will set you back $250 to $300. I also built a cabinet and use the same blaster to do all the smaller parts. I use 3 - 50lb. containers of media to do a complete car and it's misc. parts. It costs about $1.00/lb. at Grainger.
Sounds to me like I'd be better off having someone with experience do the blasting for me. On small parts or stuff I can easily get to with a wire brush/wheel I will just brush the majority of the rust off and spray it with straight phosphoric acid, let it dry then seal it, primer it and paint it. It would be too hard and time consuming to do a whole car that way though. Thanks for all your input.
