Wow, I just sent this thread link to my dad. He had a '64 Cyclone that he used to run at the old Irwindale strip in the early 70's. He ran a best of 13.70 @ 99 with a 289 and auto and slicks. Here's an old pic. He used to terrorize the streets with 4.56 gears and 8k shifts. :) He called it the "Comet Vomet"

I messed up and put this in the A/FX Falcon thread. They were both on the first page last night. FIX IT! :)

Great picture. I used to race my 65 Comet at the old Irwindale from about 69 until they closed to make beer there. ROY.

Although I don't like to see a strip close down, beer is really important! Eric

Did the comets have the problem of the rear window getting sucked out.I know the thunderbolts had the four tabs. I havent seen too much on the comets. I see they added the straps here. I dont remember seeing them when ronnie had this car.

  15. Here is a very nice '64 Comet a friend is currently building! I am sorry for the blurry pic. I wish I had taken more! Long live the '64 AFX 427 Mercury Comets! I would love to come across a nice clone or even a real one sitting in an old barn and the owner says you can have it...what I can have a fantasy .....right! P.S. Mercuryjunky your '64 is BOSS!

Those older pie crust slicks must of had softer sidewalls then the newer stuff.I dont think I can get enough air out of mine to look like these in race form.

...Jack Chrisman Comet. Pics taken at the 2004 Atlanta Dragrace Festivel. The car made an 1/8 mile pass. 100% off the line but backed off towards the end of the run. Really, really brought back memories.

Not a race car, but it does turn low 16's with 2:75 gears in the 1/4 mile. My daily driver for the last 13 years. Also have a 202 sedan in the barn because you know you just can't have to many Comets.

I know its a 67 comet but imagine if mercury would of just gave Sox and Martin two personal cars how history would have been.Would Ronnies car look like this one.Any one know which of the flip top comets this one is maybe strip teaser 4?
