"Shit, when I was a kid we LIVED on our bikes!!!"

you said it. A bike to cruise, to do wheelies to play chicken etc. I actually had an axel that was U shaped when my Dad took it out of the hub from wheelies. How about the butterfly style handlebars? Did the steering wheel too.

Bikes were my freedom, after I got my bike I could go ANYWHERE. No one knew where we were from breakfast until the streetlights came on...

First real bike was a dark purple Stingray with a purple metallic seat. I think that was back in 69 or so.

I have one of those Screamer 2's in the garage. My main bike is a 59 PantherII that I ride. The date code is from 2 weeks before I was born.

    1979 Schwinn

Got it for free and then traded it for a perfectly good OT car.

Weused to have block races on these.Shifters drag slicks on the back.Had a good friend from the neighborhood we called him eddie boy.He could ride wheelies for 2-3 city blocks.Even with one of us younger guys on the back leaning against the sissy bar just not as far.
Some guys even made choppers out of them by extending the forks.I also remember adding turn signals front and rear headlights. The reflecters that rode on the inside of the rim or on the spokes.
Good times back then you could run around all day and most of the early part of the night with no problems and not a cell phone in sight.

Since this thread came back up...
I recently sold this one  ($275)
It's an ALL original '71 that someone had thrown out!!!
All I had to do was spend a couple hours cleaning it.

This Fairlady was sold last year(paid $40 sold for $100)

This one is another '71 I've had for a long time. Convinced the Wife that it's NOT for sale...:D
The seat and sissy bar are the only non-original parts on it.

How did I miss this thread?

1968 Sting-Ray frame. Copper plated frame and Copper/chrome chain guard.
No paint on this thing, except the repro fork tube emblem. I have an original blue 67 5-speed Ram's Horn Fastback too, but no pic. It rides a lot easier than the 68.

    I love me some Sting-Rays...

Some really cool bikes and stories here. Much like some others, my parents couldn't afford a real Sting-Ray when I was a kid so I had a Japanese knock off instead. Fast forward a couple of decades when I was looking for one to use as my pit bike, my Father found this Sky Blue 1968 Deluxe model and gave it to me on my 40th birthday. I had to laugh - I wonder how many other 'kids' have ever received a Sting-Ray as a 40th birthday present from their parents and thought it was just as cool as if it was their 10th birthday!

Its good to see this thread is still going! I have a red 62 Typhoon (the only year with the straight double bars) as well SickBoy! I will have to take some updated pics of my Schwinns later and add them to this thread.

I have one of those Schwinn Swing Bikes down here in Australia, dont ask me
how it made it all the way here. It`s blue ,( original paint ). The rims, handle
bars, seat and rear guard, have been replaced at some time, but looks like the
one on this thread. Did`nt know this sort of thing was so big !
Is this thing worth anything ? can I turn it into Hot Rod parts :D Martin.

Not a sting ray but sort of a home built basterdized version of one. Done by my good friend Papa Wheelie for your's truly. Called the Klunkr.

Single speed, front brake only, its got a nice big mirror and bulb horn on the left grip. Powder coated gloss black with schwinn red metallic grips. I cruise around with my six year old son sitting in front of me on the bannana seat, which we recovered in brown courderoy from an old pair of pants I had lieing around. The kid loves riding on it with, it'll belong to him or his sibs one day.
