A friend of mine has a 4 speed transmission from a 64 Ford Galaxie...(C4AR-7-6-A........HEH D) I was just wondering if this would be a good trans to use on my 1954 Chrysler 331 motor. How much is the trans worth? I'm sure it could use a face lift but it's in decent looking shape. I would also like to use a 34 ford rear end with this set-up too. What would I have to do to make this rear end be strong enough to handle a mildly hopped up Hemi motor? I know this is more than one question but I am in the process of gathering parts for my 29 Ford 5 window project. Thank you so much for the help. I really appreciate it!
If it is a Borg Warner 4 speed, check to see if the slip yoke will slip into the back of the ******, as the extra long output shaft tends to twist on those transmissions. I have seen several of them that are twisted, and I own three of those.
Part of the answers... The trans is plenty strong for a mild 331. You will likely end up using a shiverlay adapter package and need to modify the bell for the Ford trans. Talk to Pat McGuire. .
As mentioned, the trans. will certainly fill the role; its a wide ratio and will likely have the narrow bolt pattern, if an early '64; dual patterns were offered later that year, and give more options for bell-housing possibilities. As for the early Ford rear-end, don't even think about it.......
Save that ****** for a real galaxie. The toploader for the 63 and 64 galaxie had a different tailshaft shape than other toploaders of the day, or so I am told. I know that when my father was looking to do a 4spd conversion for his 63 boxtop, the transmission guy said to get one out of those two years, as well as the crossmember. It has something to do with the floorpans, seat tracks, or something. I am sure someone here grew up with them and will be along shortly to correct me.
36 ROKIT.... I don't mean to stir the pot here but I punched in the part number and found a website that said this trans was a close ratio with a narrow bolt pattern. The trans I am thinking about getting is an HEH D tag. I can't seem to find anyone that will tell me how much it is worth. I heard mixed things about this trans also...not sure what to believe.... ****. Thanks for all your help though guys. It truly is helping me though.
Your trans is worth 3oo to 750 in my opinion, as it has the narrow pattern on the case. 64 only, I think. How does it look inside? If you don't use it, let me know.
I stand corrected; that's what I get for trusting what's left of my memory..... The only real downside for this year toploader is the narrow bolt pattern of the case, and possibly the 25 spline tail-shaft.......but there I go trusting memory again... The price range 427 gives is accurate, depending on condition. The '65-70 dual b-pattern models are more popular and considerably higher in price......
I haven't looked inside it yet...but i am going to ask my buddy if i can check it out. What does it mean they refer to it as having a "narrow" bolt pattern? What does that mean? I know it has 9 as opposed to the 7 that the Saginaw and Muncies have but not really sure what that means. I really appreciate the help.
I am referring to the bolt pattern of the trans. front case that bolts up to the bell-housing. The pre-'65 had the narrow 4 bolt pattern, while the '65-up had the "dual" or narrow/wide pattern w/ 8 bolt holes, allowing for more bell-housing applications. To further confuse the issue, they also had at least 3 different tail-shaft lengths for different cars; the full size Galaxie usually having the long (27 in.?) t-shaft. (The C-4.....number designates the t-shaft size). Shifter locations also varied; This is why you need to get all case # to determine which actual trans. you have......(Do a search for pics and more info); will help you understand some of the tech. stuff........
