What the hell kind of engine is this?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HotRodHabit, Dec 3, 2009.

  1. Anybody know what kind of engine this is? It's in a '54 Hudson Super Wasp. I was told it was a Buick, but it is not a buick. It has a Motorcraft carb, and a few things are Ford like, but not really. I've been into cars for 20+ years, and have never run across one of these. Thanks.

no, it's an AMC engine, 67ish or newer. Look at the details...angled distributor, too many valve cover bolts, ends of valve covers are square instead of angled, filler tube up front, two center exhaust ports are next to each other, etc

  5. Never seen a windsor with Siamesed exhaust valves before.

squirrel is right. looks like 304 in Ticklebears jeep.

  7. Ok, thanks, I guess it is a 304 AMC. I've never screwed with a small block AMC before, only big blocks.
    Thanks again!

  8. A '54 Hudson, ........what a place for a 304 AMC to end up! Ha! :p

I would not say it's a 304 until I looked it over pretty good, I think they cast the displacement on the side of the block like Mopars. 290, 304, 343, 360, 390, 401 all look mostly the same.

  10. Hmmm, well, I kinda remember the bigger AMC's I've had as having the distributors in the back?? But, it's been a while.

older AMCs have the dist in the back, these newer ones were all the same. The bigger displacements had weighted dampers and usually had 4bbl carbs originally, but they're kind of hard to tell apart without some numbers.

AMC they used a lot of Motorcraft parts like the carb the alternater and the starter and then used Delco ignition parts could be anything from a 290 to a 401 but being its a 2 barrell i bet its smaller

You'll be able to finger the numbers cast into the side of the block, behind (under)
the motor mount. The numbers are about 1 1/2 in tall and nice ly cast, so it will be
    easy to feel the differance between 290, 304, 343, 360, 390, 401.

Also the tag on the valve cover will have a letter in the middle. The different letters represent engine combos. I think N is 4 bbl 360, P is 2bbl 360, and Z is 390 or 401.

I'm sure in Jeeps, anyway, they used the Delco points dizzy till '73 ish, then changed to the Motorcraft duraspark boxes. But they bought from the cheepest supplier, so who knows. Mopar, GM, and Ford all in one great little package.

Please keep it alive, don't just toss it. If your close to me let me know.

  27. Hey don't badmouth those ol AMC's too bad. It's not a bad design at all. There's still lots of aftermarket support and parts available and whether by marriage or merger, it's as close a relative as you can find in a modern V-8 for that Hudson. I'd say keep it! (that little tag on the front of the right valve cover should give you your engine size as long as it's original)
    Good luck!

AMC motor's are cool as hell.. I had a chance to get a 401, but I took my own sweet time and the car got s****ped..

I'd leave it in there, it'd get alot of people scratchin' their heads..
