Hey all, I am about to get hold of a freshly rebuilt 235 (53 truck), full pressure motor. But it has the center bolt heads, or valve cover hold downs. My question is, if i want to go with a cheaper 4 bolt valve cover is there an adapter to make this fit, I would love to go with a Fenton, Wayne or Offy valve cover but the budget dictates that I go a little bit cheaper. As always any and all help is greatly appreciated!!!
chrome 2 bolt covers are cheap and shiny I'm going even cheaper till something turns up, stripped stock to blend with the rest of the engine
I was just looking at this site yesterday. I would like to find out who makes a NO NAME aluminum cover. http://www.chevsofthe40s.com/shop/s...e+cover&year=All&dept=Car&searchtype=FT&Go=Go
You can get an adapter, but I always liked the stock ones. Makes me wonder if they have a adapter to go from four bolt to center for my 235...
freshly rebuilt 235 (53 truck), full pressure motor There are no 1953 full pressure truck motors, only 1953 Powerglide car engines and 1954-* all. Is this converted to pressure rods?
Yes they do. It makes your 235 look more like a 216. Check the old truck vendors. And Panic is right, this isn't a full pressure 235 we're talking about. Unless someone has put an adapter to the 2-bolt type valve cover this isn't a full pressure motor. There was a truck 235 with the 2-bolt cover and it could be one of those, but if so its a splash oiler.
Yes, unless it was a rare factory optioned automatic transmission truck. I think some came equipped as so...
I don't know what the motor was out of, but was supposed to go into a truck, but I guess I will be calling the machine shop in the morning to get the casting numbers off of the head & block. Then cross refrence with Patrick;s so that I have an idea of what the hell I'm getting hold of. I know that the 54 235 (car) is center bolt/full pressure but I am not for sure what I am getting here. Better do my homework before I buy...thanks for the heads up!!!!
Put your 216 valve cover on it and make it look like it still has a 216 in it,I have a 57 235 in my 37 p/u and put the 216 parts on it and it has confused a few. I am still trying to see if I can get a 216 side cover to work but I have some modifications to do to it.
That aluniumn center bolt valve cover is awesome looking! Great to see more choices for the centerbolt 216/235 engines. I just bought a stock valvecover and mounting hardware and bolted it on. I took liberty to have all the engine sheet metal powdercoated with this "Hammer" finish. And I added the '37-'47 oil fill tube as it is down on the side as the early covers have no oil fill hole.
The more I think about it I think the 54 full pressure motors had the 4 screw valve covers like the 55 to 62s so it might be a splash 235.
Correct. The '54 full pressure motors had the later valve cover. I have a splash 235 and looking at the outside of it you'd be hard pressed to tell it from a 216.
I wish I knew about the 235 splash motors when I put my 37 togather as I would of found one and had it converted to full pressure,I did not know about the 261s either but its too late now.
261s debuted in '54, and all of them have full pressure oiling. The only full pressure engine to come from the factory with a center bolt valve cover is a '53 PG engine.
While they're full pressure, they're still a bit odd. Although they have insert mains, the clearance is still adjusted with shims between the block and the cap, like a babbit setup. Also, they were the last of the small journal camshafts. Most hot 235 cams you find are for the '54-'62 engine blocks.
They were optional in 2-ton Chevy trucks '54 to '62. Start looking under old hoods.... And if I remember right some Canadian Pontiacs used them for a few more years in the 60's.
I know all about them now but when I started to put my 37 togather (1990) I did not have a computer but how things have changed since I got my first computer in 01.
Me too. There's about 1/16" of depth available to do whatever you want. Tom I can't get your website?
Ah, the stinkin website is kaput. PM me and I'll get you one. Curt the cover looks GREAT. I'll post another picture of a valve cover I did for the purifoy 33 sedan when I get home - it is a laser engraved cover (the very first valve cover as a matter of fact) thanks for the kind words saltflatmatt and slick39...... hey povertyflats, that thing looks kind of cool in a big picture. thanks
