[IMG] Not a car but cool none the less. I love the style of the old drag bikes that were fly weight, six inch wide slick, and leave in haze of smoke.

If you're referring to the picture on page 1, the answer is no - The roadster in the background is a '32 Ford, if you look at the frame.

Tucker's car was a silver '28 Chevy on a '34 Ford frame (which was later shortened, when Hugh switched the steel body to a fiberglass piece)

  6. Awesome picture, That'll make your ears ring!

that photo post #15568 is a great example of how close the front row in bleachers you were on the tower side of LIONS. Believe me...you actually went home at the end of the night smelling of nitro...really.
It was unbelieveable how close you were. One man lost his arm when Garlits had his clutch explosion, and one spectator was blinded by a runaway flywheel when a Mopar did a "neutral start" with his Torque-flite.

the yellow dot would be about the spot from where that photo was taken

Trivia: The fire station used in the "Emergency" TV show in the '70s is also on 223rd, just west of the former Lions site.

Those were the days! You can't have fun without some element of danger in this sport, racing OR watching. A buddy of mine was sitting on the roof of his old Chevy van at Tulsa some years ago when a fueler let go of a blower on the big end. The parts went through his windshield, and dented the roof all up right in front of where he was sitting.
Even as "Safe" as tracks are supposed to be today, I took my wife to her first big NHRA race a few years ago at Memphis, and the last run of qualifiying we were about 100 foot from the traps, last run of the night, Schumacher vs Dixon, under the lights. Schumacher has a blowover, his Dad is standing just about where it happened, out by the concrete barrier along side the track (you see, when you're a drag racing legend, you can stand where you want). Tony was fine. Next moring we're driving into the pits from the top end enterance and I notice a nice stacker tailer with a huge hole tore in it. Turns out, that's where one of Tony's slicks went, right through some poor sportsman's trailer! I have no idea how much damage was done inside the trailer, or if the race car was even in there. As for Tony, Allen Johnson rebuilt the car with a new chassis (OK, we all know the whole damn thing was new) and he won the race on Sunday.

  12. Doug, Thanks for posting the arial view of Lions again, brings back so many memories. I remember once when blower parts came showering down on us at about that same spot. nobody was injured. We loved it...

  14. @64Cyclone: Any idea what tracks are shown in those films? The one with Austin is freakin' narrow! The one with Joniec looks like York.

  15. The Austin clip was at Double H Dragway in Georgia along with the Howard Neal T-bolt footage. The Joniec shots look to be Maple Grove Dragway.

That would be Double H dragstrip. There are a few clips on Youtube and their site. Personally I like Comets and Fairlanes so I just collected a few clips and edited them together. :)
