couple of pics of mine, not an old build though, it was put together about three years ago. Cheers.......Pete
uncles 31 on 32 rails at bonnieville...sure wish we could find it..sold it in 1962 in Sac...like he's said - 32 roadsters were hard to find (cheap/heavy)- even in the 40's...
Here's a little proof that they were not all built to a high standard. I spotted this Model A in a vacation trip to Cape Cod around 1955. The brothers who owned it told me they had built it in 1949, but would sell it to me if I had $1,000. I was 13 and it would be many years before I had a grand to buy a hot rod.
My attempt at late '40s multi purpose Hot Rod. Great thread. Hope it gets legs like the Vintage Sprint Car one did.
photo's courtesy of the Late Rosie Roussel....(most of these are late 40's, touching on early 50's) a few jalopies.... and a few roadsters... R.I.P. More James.....more.... Cheers, Drewfus
This is a great thread! Thanks to all of the posters and comments. Its the real deal, a HAMB classic in the making. I have always been interested in the 29 roadster that Don Ferrera built and ran in SO CAL the middle 40s. There is a great collection of photos at the American Hot Rod Foundation site. Here is a super opportunity to watch the progress of this roadster from banger power up through the flathead build, to the magazine car I first saw in Hot Rod Magazine in the early 60s. BTW, this is also a good chance to chronical the progress of subtle changes in style, and watch the influences of the street vs. the track as this and other cars evolved. http://www.ahrf.com/view_collection.php?CollectionID=39&submit=VIEW
While this is a "little" different '40,s period correct Hot Rod, this article on history of Hot Rodding was published in 1947. Written from the perspective of 1947 , I figured it would be appreciated on this thread. This story was published in Model Craftsman magazine in the tethercar section. The gas model Hot Rod made by Duro-matic in Hollywood sold for $42.50 LESS engine. Probably more money than some guys at El Mirage had in their car less engine.
My attempt at a post war build...shooting for '47-48 era. Although it's probably one of those builds that could have been...but no one would have... Neal
If you guys like the pics in this thread.............. you really need to get this guys books. Don Montgomery's books are like bibles for early hot rodding. I am sure alot of you have them already, but if you don't,........ get them. Alot of the photos on this thread come from his books. Mr. Montgomery, your books have been an inspiration for me, and helped me build my roadster. I know it is not entirely 40's era with the 8ba, but I enjoy it, and drive it everywhere. thanks again, and it is great to see how many people enjoy this era of hot rods.
I tried to do my roadster in a 40's flavour, but i blew it & put a '53 olds "303" in it . Great thread BTW.
