is there a way to get a axle bearing off the axle and not mess up the bearing, its a 61 impala rear axle, thanks
Hard but not impossible. Then again a new bearing is not all that expensive compared to the work to repace one that might go bad, let alone the inconvienance. If your doing a set up that requires you the remove the bearing several times, when you do get a used beearing, Hone it for a bump fit. Then install a new when finished. If you forgot to install the bearing retainer when putting on a new bearing .... consider using a C-shaped aftermarket bearing retainer from Moser or others that just slips over the axle.
I have nothing whatsoever to contribute to this thread, except a heartfelt "attaboy" for being one of the very few HAMBers who knows how to spell axle!
Is this a spelling bee??? You need to press the bearing off using a bearing/flange attachment, but you still take a chance on killing your bearing.
well if the axle is junk then it makes it eaier, to a point. cut off the end of the axle (flange side) then press the bearing further on (but actually off) if that makes sense. the hard part would be cutting the axle right next to the bearing.
should be able to cut it with a 4-1/2 cut off wheel in a grinder, only problem is the flange is in the way, so youd have to cut most of the flange off first, you might go thru a couple o f disc but if it saves the bearing. no $100 seems correct for that bearing, they are expensive, ive been in parts/automotive machine shop for 10 years, dont lost of the 55-64 rear wheel bearings, the 55 (one of the tri five) is an od bearing and even more. JEFF
when i had my shop,i used to have an account with bearing technologies ltd (formaly green bearing) and those bearings were about 30,35 bucks a piece.100.00 bucks is a ripoff.
56-56 same bearing 57 all by itself 58-64 same bearing I have been buying these bearings for years the 57 is the highest... but all seem to be close to $100.00
then you were getting a good deal, and had a resource we didnt have, ive been in the parts bus for 10 years, both at auto parts stores with machine shops, the first 5 years i was a counterman, the last 5 years i ran the machine shop at the second parts store and also did counter duties alot, bca bearings were 55/56 rw507er $82.99, 57 rw307r $92.99 and 58-64 rw607nr $112.99, theres always a better deal, just not one we could get. at the first store we stocked a few of the "green" repair bearings but only what the warehouse stocked.
