Hello all. I would like to upgrade 1948 ford f68 3/4 ton. Any ideas on a suitable donor frame. I've put a 1953 gmc one ton on an s10 but I thought it was a little wide over the s 10 chasis. It still powered by the flatty and I would like to keep that in it. Suggestions? Thanks. WarD
I drove a 1948 ford pickup for 18 years with a FATMAN'S mustang II CROSSMEMBER UNDER THE FRONT END.......... rode and handled great and it was not nearly as much work as a frame swap.....
The one disadvantage 3/4 ton ch***is I can think of is the weight. It's a little heavier than the 1/2 ton. The easiest thing to do is find a F-1 frame and transfer your engine and sheet metal. You should be able to find a rotted F-1 fairly easy. The frames usually hold up longer than the bodies. You'd also have either lengthen the frame or shorten your box. You could also just swap axles on your original frame. There's easier ways than swapping onto a newer frame.
I think one of the key questions has to be what are you going to do with it? If it is going to be a beast of burden, or tow big, heavy stuff, you need one thing; if you want to get to/from work and drag a Christmas tree home every year, lighter-duty stuff will do.
