Powder coated my chassis & frame in 1995, still looking good!!---After all, these cars are to be DRIVEN,---NOT a piece of art!!! If chips bother you,------Just number them!!!-------Don
I'm a fan of powder. I have noticed a few not so true statements here that I would like to clear up. If filling and smoothing minor imperfections is a concern, there sandable powder primers available. As well as zinc rich primers for corrosion protection. As a note on corrosion protection, if the chassis os properly pretreated with a phosphating solution before coating, rust creep from chips will be much less of a problem. Also if a chip occurs, it can be touched up with a liquid paint that matches the color to prevent rust from starting. I say powder coat it.
powder coat, and with all the new technology there can be fillers, and block sanding done prior to color coat for a great looking durable finish. I know we can usually give a client a coated frame cheaper than QUALITY paint materials can be purchased for, that still wont be as durable.
just saw a 53 chevy frame powdercoated cost $1600 and i wouldn't even think of powdercoating a frame . afew quarts of por15 less than $100 and a few paint brushes and there ain't many spots you can't hit. if you spray it buy a cheap harbor freight gun and toss it once your done easy to touch up and looks good
I had my frame powdercoated with an epoxy primer to make sure that all surfaces were protected. I then sanded it with 320, before applying a sealer , basecoat and three coats of clear . I then did a color sand and rub. I would do the exact same thing again .
Bill , DuPont Variprime 615S is a good choice. Its really not that expensive. Remember you only need 1 or 2 mils of coverage for it to work. You dont have to have complete color coverage, that is what the primer surfacer is for. After all is debated I guess either way is still far better than what old Henry painted them with.
I shot my frame with epoxy primer to make sure that all surfaces were protected. I then sanded it with 320. Next I shot urethane three times sanding each coat and then a coat of sealer , basecoat and three coats of clear . I then did a color sand, rub and buff.
Powder coated the frame, also has a clearcoat to give it the shine. There are fillers you can use which make it through the bake.
I had the frame on my bike powder coated. It was shiney black for a while then it dulled to a semi-gloss, it still looks good, but not as good as it did. Ron
Gee Hot turkey, you went through a lot of labor on that frame. As GREAT as your frame looks, it was well worth the effort!! It almost seems a shame to cover it up with the body. BILL RINALDI
just like paint you can wax and buff powder to get the luster to return to it. here's one with ghosting efx we just did for Crawl magazine, and Extreme 4X4 on SPIKE tv
