Hi, I'm new here so go easy on me. My 1964 Impala convertible was a bit rusty when I got it 13 years ago. Unfortunately, I am still not done fixing it. This is the gas tank filler neck surround piece. It is found welded-to / rotting-off the drivers side rear outer wheel house. Anywho, here is how I fixed it. Enjoy! -Jeremy
I originally bought the car when I was 15, and allllmost 28 now. It turns out that high school, money, college, girls, wife, and a house slows automotive restoration quite a bit. So yeah, almost 13 years now. eek! When I was 15 I did want a "Pimpala", but I have grown up since then, so no worries there! Now I want straight oe-looking metal with little to no bondo, and a nice running & driving convertible to cruise in. Onward with the photos! In this picture you can see (from the inside of the trunk) where I repaired the quarter panel when I was 16 (d'oh!). I overlapped the metal, and generally did a piss poor job with the repair. It has haunted me for about 11 years. Here is the quarter panel being separated from the tail light surround. I drilled the spot welds that held the quarter panel to the inner wheel well. Here is the front of the quarter panel being separated from the door jamb. This is the wheel arch separated from the inner wheel well. A few quarter panel shots after it was removed. Here we have the gas door area of the wheel well. It was severely rotted for various reasons. This is the trunk drop off. It is rotted like everything else. ...And here is the wheel well rot that I had to fix.
Holy crap....While not the worst i've seen, still tons of work...Looks good so far. Do you have a donor car or are you using re-pop steel?
Hey looks good! Sure is a lot of work. I have the same problem on my 64 Buick. They sure like to rust around the filler neck, the outer wheel lip, the inner fender, the trunk floor, etc.....
Ive had a bit of a virus this week but I can say without fear of contradiction that I should be right as rain come the end of March 2010.
