This is the real point! Everyone is crying that a piece of American automotive history is being lost but how many have stepped up to the plate and bought a new Vehicle with a big block in it in the last 5 years? You can whine, cry and call names that if a guy isn't outraged he is not a hot rodder but unless you have actively done something to justify GM building big blocks (buying a new car with one in it) you have no leg to stand on with this arguement because you are as much to blame as anyone else.

uh....my idea of hot rodding is taking leftovers that other people bought new, and combining them in a new way. So I'd get an old truck big block and stick it in an even older car/truck.

Seems that most hot rodders depend on normal folks to provide the raw materials, by buying the new cars.

That is definitley the case but normal folks no longer want what hot rodders want so.....pretty hard to be taken seriously when you ***** and you are as much a cause of the problem as anyone else.

I didn't know I was *****ing. There are still plenty of raw materials around for us.

  6. Most new cars, even trucks with a big block, are pretty user-unfriendly for hot rod purposes anyhow. At least as installed in the vehicles, with EFI and all that. At least for the purposes of this site, you generally aren't building a car that you need a computer engineering degree to get running down the road.

like Squirrel said, there's plenty of raw materials, I see older (80s, 90s) big-blocks for sale fairly often and not that expensive, I don't think we're going to run out in our lifetimes.

it makes me feel good to look at this post and see the guys that have been here forever (or so it seems) to still take up the shield for this. Squirrel, Sam, the rest of You guys...You are what makes me have a little bit of faith in humanity...

    however.

WHAT THE **** DOES ANYONE MEAN A BIG BLOCK WAS UNNECCECARY IN A CAR?!? IS THERE A MAN IN YOUR ENTIRE ****ING FAMILY? Seriously. so You either don't dig on muscle cars, or have never been to a drag race, or have never been around the block a few times behind one.

    REST IN PEACE-

    BIG BLOCK CHEVY
    BIG BLOCK BUICK
    BIG BLOCK OLDS
    BIG BLOCK PONTIAC
    BIG INCH FORDS.
    BIG INCH MOPARS.

take Your ls motor and 5 speed auto and moisten them, roll them into a tube, and firmly plant them in your ***. better yet, come to my neighborhood, and I will show you that any one of the above, neccecary or not, will indeed outperform it.

the death of every one of those is equal to the death of the middle cl***, and the further pussification of America.

    rant over.

    LUX,
I geuss need and want do mean the same thing..

my last hot rod and my last two daily drivers were all big chevy powered,
part of me really misses them

but today my daily has the 5.3
and all my hot rods have early Olds'

I must not have given up completely on the big chevy though
I can't bring myself to giving the one I still have away
but I'd gladly trade it for something more necessary

like a full race early Olds

Look closley between the lines. The government now is in charge at GM. When Chrysler got their loan guarrantee from the government , they made chrylser halt ALL big block production as part of cosigning the loan. Their reasoning at the time was, they were going to force a car company to be fuel efficient. As a result, Chrysler lost thier biggest money maker, motorhome ch***is and as they say the rest is history. So get your bicycles ready because Obamarama isn't done yet!

I bought big blocks until the end (8 Liters) I even still have a fairly rare 3/4 ton 8 liter 4wd suburban. But now have been forced to a diesel to get power. Might like the 8 liter in my future deuce BB truck, but maybe a little big? Times change

Once you run a big block the small blocks are just a disappointment from a performance standpoint. my2cents

:) Well said. Not liking muscle cars and big blocks is like saying you don't like America, Beautiful Women, etc, etc....

Necessary? Maybe not. However, you cannot deny the feeling you get from being planted in the seat by one of these big monsters. It's almost spiritual....

Unnecessary? Economics? *****in'? Whining? Crying? Geeeeeeeez, you guys. All NITROFC wanted to do, is momentarily grieve the p***ing of another hot rod icon. All this other peripheral B.S. is beside the point. It's another sign of the times, and from a hot rodder's point of view, it's a sad day. Simple........And BTW, leave the politics out of it.

You obviously missed the point. Those glorious muscle car days have been over for 30 years. Either embrace the wonderful LS that keeps the pushrod v8 alive, or don't. It's still a free country.

That said, I am putting a 455/t400 olds in my car. And I fully intend to repair my other 455 and put it in a metric regal/cutl*** for a sleeper. it will have a 200-4r and if all goes well, burn up some dinosaurs.

For those who think "it's a sign of the times" what will you say if you are "told" you cannot use a carbureted engine in your newly built Rod? OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ****!!!!! I forgot, it's already happening!!!!!!!!!
