Kurtis, love that shot of Phil Remington in his Streamliner. Almost 130 MPH! And Howard Johansens twin tank is NUTS. Gotta find out more about it. Thanks. Slim

Me too. I can't wait to see the Dan Webb clone.

According to the book "Drive ins, Dry Lakes and Drag Racing" the Johanson streamliner was built in 1949 and first raced at Bonneville. While it did race at Bonny, it's first iteration {red car} was raced unsuccessfully with the Merc motor at one of the California dry lakes. A Hemi was later installed and the body painted yellow. I'm not sure what speed this car achieved but in the Dean Batchelor book it is listed as going 147.54MPH, at Bonneville in '49. ???
This car has always been compared to the Piero Taruffi 'TWIN BOOM' record breaker which was built in '48.

Sorry these photos are not from the '40s but it is the same hotrod.

    Keith,

I don't now much about that car but it looks very familiar to the same one Eddie Meyer brought to the lakes in 1940.

The Meyer car was the first rear engined roadster and it was also the fastest at it's first outing.

This one built in Sweden by Micke Fors. Unfortunately doesn´t look the same today due new owner. Perfect as well as Duster Swe´s roadster.

Found these photos over at the Autoculture blog...isn't it perrfect? The car is a survivor and was raced by the Morris brothers (Richard and George) back in the days. the car was found and restored by Dave Tanimura!

Here is an old photo of the car racing against Fred Larsen in his model a roadster. The photo is "borrowed" from the SoCal Speedshop book

thanks, but all the contributers to this thread are the ones to thank! its a part of our history that needed to be seen and put out there for people to understand that it wasnt about shinny, glitzy, and flared out cars (not that theres anything wrong with that either) when it comes down to it it wasnt even about "my car is faster than yours" (to some extent) it was about lets see how fast we can go! and then try to top that the next time, re-uniting with your buddies and sharing tips and techniques to make your car run harder and faster!
I absolutely love these pictures and stories, everyone here is a blessing to have for contributing to such a wonderful part in history! and its not just the cars in the pictures...its looking at the surroundings in the photos, the cars and stuff in the back ground, the grease on their clothing, just thinking how their life was and dealing with daily work and then having this as a hobby and lifestyle, the way the buildings, signs and anything in the pic looks, and just to imagine how things have changed....its really beyond comprehension how important and beautiful these pics and stories are...thank you all so much!

Kevin Lee's old car kinda nailed the period vibe.

I hope that Wild Turkey 46 doesn't mind me posting these as he owns it now. I didn't have any particular era in mind when I built it just used what I liked. And at the time the fake patina thing was in high gear and I shamefully admit I got caught up in it.
