From the looks of the center port shape I'd say they started out as a set of '69 400/428 #46 small-valve (1.96/1.66) 72cc castings. 1969 was when Pontiac first started to leave off the end tapped holes, but not on the big-valve castings that year.

The exhaust manifolds were missing the end bolt holes on all of the D-port heads that year, but of course they bolted up fine to the heads that weren't missing the tapped holes.

By 1973 the two center ports were squared-off and didn't have that nicely sculpted look of the earlier heads.

Beautiful. I'm going to grind my 283 smooth one day.

  3. It would be a REAL Pisser if you found a cracked block in the last stages of grinding...!

Or put a rod through the side of it one day.

I use blocks up too fast to put that kind of effort into them.

    Though now that I think about it, I bet mud wouldn't stick to them as bad . . . . . .

Nice job and your right don't start! I did one 30 years ago and my hands still hurt from all the grinding and polishing. I have been with the old reliable paint gun every since.

an old guy I knew years ago did his big block Chevrolet in his squirt boat. The block was perfectly smooth and so where the heads...a few hundred hours of his life invested in something that had no effect to how fast that boat would go.

Looks great! Not sure if I am going to put that on the list of "to do's" for the Caddy though.

So are you complaining or just bitching .
That engine is beautiful and worth every minute you have in it .
I was thinking of just doing the heads on mine and leaving the block alone . I do know it's a long process but the results are priceless !
    Great job !

That is just flat pretty. It should be a classy looking engine when it's done' I've got a few hours in on a big block Chev block but after looking at that it may need a few hundred hours to get it up to par. And yes I intend to drive the hell out of it when it's done. Just because a guy drives one hard doesn't mean it has to look like crud.
