Radio's In a Traditional Hot Rod

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 345 DeSoto, Dec 22, 2009.

  1. Radios have become a No No as of late.
Of course if you put a trade radio in one you aren't going to get anything but talk radio anyway. They just don't put much on the AM scale anymore.

And if you were/are high zoot you had/have one rear seat speaker along with the front speaker and a fader switch to control the sound front to back. That's big time up through the mid 60's.

  3. My music is out back, and is all I need.

There was a "fad" in the 50's and early 60's when various critter tails usually ra**** or fox were sold for antenna toppers.Anyone have an ancient J.C. Whitney catalog? They are still for sale on ebay and www.shrunkenheads.com there was even a post started here back in 9/2/08 four pages long, so I guess if you got an antenna you would have a radio.

"Biff" had a radio in his Ford convertible in "Back To The Future" in 1955?
Not that that means much, but he could get the sports scores?

It's just a personal preference but I want to hear, feel, and smell what the engine and ch***is are doin' at all times and agonize for hours over it if I notice anything out of the ordinary.

That's for the hot rod truck. If I had a lead sled, on the other hand, it would probably have tunes.

Yeah right, nobody has ever taken their best girl to a secluded spot and tried to go farther than you ever have before with the radio playing

Here is mine. I was told by a stereo vendor that it too can be converted to modern stereo complete with a remote CD player. The MP3 player seems to be the hot lick today. This was a 30s-40s era accessory.

When I was a kid in the late 50s we had to have a radio to keep up with the current tunes. Today as an old man even the oldies stations are too new for me. I like to listen to the pipes.:D

Most of the time it was a radio scavenged from the drive line parts car. You'd see lots of old hotrods with 55 Chevy radios. Sometimes in the dash and sometimes in a box under the seat. The Corvair had a bolt on radio housing that was often added under the dash of a hotrod. This was all before FM.

I've got a couple outside attached to 30's Chevies...

But if you look on eBay there is a guy who buys and restores ol' car antennas, he's got some cool ****..

I want to take the radio in the '47 Plymouth I'm partin' and Hide a couple speakers in it, and then hide a cd player and an iPod somewhere, with a cowl 'tenna...

It's time to throw a turd in the punch bowl and recommend the MoPar 45 RPM under dash record players as being traditional. Great tunes and no problems with an antenna sticking out.

"Traditional hot rodding is thinking outside the box, not paint by numbers."

  21. what about an 8-track player??? i have a **** load of 8-tracks...

Does anyone REALLY give a damn if someone else has a radio in their car??? Really??

As a kid in the early 70's, I came across a couple of those old 45rpm record players that sat on the 'hump' under the dash. I thought they were ridiculous, because the needle would skip whenever you hit a bump! (I think they were $.50 at the swap-meet).
It never occured to me that they were only for playing when the car was stationary ...
Radios were so much a part of the culture, even when they were only AM. It just wasn't cool to be driving without tunes of some sort.

The problem with radio now is not the radio itself, it is like with TV, most stuff on it is just ****. AM full of hot air bags and freaks and FM nothing but commercial garbage. If you live in an area with a good station to listen to, count yourself very lucky. Otherwise, install a concealed ipod and run through a converted vintage AM radio head - use vintage speaker and/or hide new small ones.

8-track? man, that's modern. Our club (Early Times) took a bunch of rods to a three day show in Oregon in 1967 and there was a mad dash to quickly install 4-track players to break up the boredom of the drive.
We had two 4-track tapes, the Doors (first album) and Sgt. Pepper's, which just came out in the car I was driving.
8-tracks were just beginning to replace 4-tracks, but the 4-track tapes were plentiful and cheaper.
Race cars don't have music, street driven cars usually did, not only because it was enjoyable, but also because there usually was a lady with you, and ladies like music.
I mean, this was Southern California in the mid-60's...everything was about the beach, the girls, the cars and the music. Everything.
I don't remember any of my fellow rodders 45 years ago saying..."hey, man, I don't want no music...my music is my pipes rumbling"....geez, if anyone acted that goofy 45 years ago he would have been cruising alone...:):):)

the sweet sound of my pipes or the ol'ladys talkin' isn't gonna cut it all the way to the Fla. keys. & 700 watts isn't about just loudness, it's about quality. I'm going to drive my car, not sit in the garage.

Put a modern CD player in the glove box of my 48 with two good rear speakers and one front. Trouble is I can't hear it when I'm driving. Think maybe I need some floorboard insulation. Just thinking CD players are not the modern thing anymore. God I have trouble keeping up with stuff.
Yeah I should be out doing something but I'm getting too old to work out in a freezing garage.
