Damn that 60-66 C10 picture thread!!!

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=108866&page=44

After going through the thread this morning I got a wild hair and went down to see my buddy about a '63 C20 fleetside he had at his shop that I had been able to resist asking about for the past 3 years. My memory wasn't so good though, it was a '66 C10 Custom LWB fleetside. Original 283 is gone now but the truck 4 speed is still there, front fenders are rusty (I'm sure no one is surprised at that) and it has some light barnyard rash but otherwise not bad at all. It has a Kansas ***le and it has a letter from the Kansas owner's family certifying that the 42,216 miles on the odometer are actual miles, no rollover. Cab floor and mounts are solid as are the drip rails and A pillars, the bed needs one board replaced, the box has a tweaked back corner and it has "patina" out the ***. I caught him at just the right moment and he quoted me the "too many projects, something has to go NOW" price and now it's my "too many projects" problem.

I'm going to replace the fenders, patch any holes, make sure the brakes and suspension are good, lower it a bit and drop a roller cam SBC with a ZZ4 roller cam but old style heads and intake and replace the 4 speed with an NV3500 5 speed OD and an old style shift lever adapted to the Hurst ****er to keep it looking stock inside the cab. Then, I'm going to drive the wheels off it. If we ever get any decent weather I'll get some pics. It's that deep sky blue with a white roof and red spear inside the side moldings. Very faded with lots of brown patina. The dash is pristine and the interior is in surprisingly good condition for a farm truck, must not have had any hogs.

Now I just have to find the right time to introduce it to the wife....

Thanks, just keep an eye on the homeless shelters in Western Illinois in a couple months. If I'm not there it went OK. ;) The introduction won't happen for awhile, I get to store it right where it's at until the news is broken. She'll be cool with it but right now isn't the best timing so I'll just wait for better cir***stances. If I catch a break in the rain tomorrow I'll get some pics.

Question.... Is it "uncool" to put new fenders on and then have them painted and weathered to match the rest of the truck? It's an honest old survivor and I want to preserve that as much as possible plus I just plain like the weathered look. It's a pretty solid old truck but the fenders between the wheel wells and doors are gone.

patching the fender bottoms and blending them in to match shouldn't be to hard. don't worry about trying to match them to the truck as much as trying to blend the two together. scrub with CLR and a grey scotchbrite and then blend/buff your repair area to where you CLR'd. they will usually blend pretty well if you take a little care with it....ken...

Sounds like a great project congratulations! I know what my wife would say, something has to go so good luck with yours. With 8 vehicles I guess something would have to go if not I might be gone. :(

They're gone all the way up to the hood, it's really weird because the rest of the truck is so solid, new fenders will be a lot easier. I'll make a note of that though, thanks.

You might want to go take a look at what I posted in that C10 thread and you may fall in love with the C10 you bought even more

That's sweet. It reminds me of this smokin' hot redhead I saw at a gas station one time though. ***y as Hell and I'd LOVE to take it for a spin but I knew beyond any doubt I couldn't afford the maintenance! ;):D But yeah, that is one nice truck!:cool::cool:

if it's og facotry paint you could try looking for replacements in the same og color. again even if they aren't patina'd to the same levels after a CLR scrub and a buff of the whole truck they would probably look like they belong there originally. very common practice in the vw world of people wanting og paint cars. i've seen cars with fenders from 2-3 different cars mixed together and it not be noticeable...ken...

Well that could work, the sky blue was a very common color but you won't find a parts truck anywhere near Illinois that still has decent fenders and from the prices of the good used ones I've found on the internet by the time I paid shipping I might as well buy new and paint them. We'll see what turns up though, I waited 3 years for the right price on the truck. I can wait for a good price on fenders, plenty of other stuff to do before it has to have those.

Heading down now to try to snap some pics between showers.

That opens an old wound :(, I had a '63 C10 Panel and my 1st wife sold it without asking me, she was so proud because she got $200 more than I paid for it.... Part of the reason she is now referred to as my "1st" wife.

Here it is, it's not rust free but except for the fenders what it does have is pretty minor and will be an easy fix. The odometer is correct and has not been rolled over. I quoted the mileage a couple hundred too high.

i bet if you keep your eyes peeled here and the 60-66 chevy truck forum somebody will be parting out a truck that color and you may could grab the fenders. the repops i've seen weren't that impressive so spending money on good og ones would be option 1 for me with repops as a backup. around here that is the most commonly seen color on those trucks. maybe because it's close to carolina blue haha. i'll keep my eye peeled local for ya. there is a guy about 30 minutes from me that i know has a parts truck with a set that color but lets just say i'm not really welcome at his place after calling him a dumb*** haha.

i was hot and heavy on this one but found what i was really looking for and bought it yesterday(60 ford).

had a local guy go look at it and it's a decent truck with very little rust. i think the thing thats maybe kept it from selling is since those posted pics he has pulled the bed completely apart. i'm guessing people are diapppointed when they get there and see that. only reason i had a problem with it is it was gonna make it more of a pain in the *** for the hauler i had looking to pick it up for me(loose bedsides and whatnot). the 283 ran like a top and was supposedly rebuilt. the guy who looked at for me said the guy reached in from out side and fired it right up and it was sitting dead cold. guy said he hadn't cranked it for nearly a week. around here that truck at that price woulda been long gone...ken....

Sorry to hear that man, I was trying to be a smart*** & ended up looking stupid. wasn't the first time & likely won't be the last. there are a lot of women who just flat don't get it. hopefully the next one is more into the car thing than the first one.

truck looks good, can't wait to see progress pics. always liked that body style.

a old chevy truck is always a good score, good for you.
    Also remember...
It is easier to find and ole lady than score an old truck.
    Good luck!
    Happy Holidays!

Don't feel bad at all, not your fault I married Cruella Deville the first time. Wife #2 is far cooler, just need to break this one to her gently. She really digs my Stude just not all my "distractions" and BOY is a truck a big one! :D

Yeah, I think it's going to have to get painted sooner than I originally planned, there's not much there keeping the elements off the metal. Might not be an issue in a drier climate but in the Midwest.......... not so good.

I haven't painted for awhile and I was only so-so at it then. This might be a good Guinea Pig to practice on before I try the Stude.
