Macdonald Avenue in Richmond, California, west from 8th Street, 1944. During the war Richmond was home to a large Kasier shipyard employing thousands of people.




Shipyard workers lived in drafty, quickly-constructed wooden barracks apartments during the war which, after the war, became low-income housing. Richmond, 1944.

Bumper-to-bumper afternoon traffic on the SF Bay Bridge, 1938. Traffic was two-way on the upper deck until about 1960. Note man by tree at right and his car parked just beyond.




Entrance to Sutro's, an ice-skating rink and family entertainment center along the ocean at San Francisco, 1956. It was once a large series of salt-water baths and pools built in the 1890s, burned down in 1966. Its ruins remain to this day, just west of the Golden Gate Bridge near the Cliff House.
