Cry me a west coast river .....sweetie. The Power Tour has started or ended so many times in CA it's not even funny. Long haul is long haul, doesn't matter where it starts and ends if your going to drive the whole thing you need to get to the start line and home from the finish. A group of us were trying to get the powers that be to do this route for many years. Too many isolated areas where not enough daily peeps would attend for the vendors is the reason I was told. Whatever The PT used to be for the participants, now the vendors run the show. The vendors started crying about having to work all day at a venue then run all night to get to the next venue and set up and work. I don't know about anyone else but I don't need vendors at the end of my days run. Give me a hot shower, decent food and some hanging out in a motel parking lot.
dirtbag, let us know for sure if you are going to be hosting some sort of kickoff party. what is everyone doing about hotels? are you booking them in advance or just going to play it by ear? the gf and I think we are just going to play it by ear since im sure there will be some nights where only a few hours of sleep will be had and we agreed that a shower everyother day or everyday at a truckstop would be ok.
The HAMB is big enough- somebody here needs to start a cross country road trip for traditional rodders!
Open to all years. I've taken my old Mustang on three tours so far. '05, '08, '09. Long hauled all three. This last tour I got a peep show, a marriage propsal, met the daughter I never had and drove the car on the NASCAR track in Bristol, TN...at speed...as fast as I could go...brakes burning, tires squealing, spinchter sucking up seat upholstery. Oh yeah, that was fun....
Many book hotels as early as possible, others look for Mom-N-Pops that are cheap & haven't heard about the Tour. I had about half the Tour stops booked @ Knights Inns @ about 45 a night. When they moved the Detroit stop from Warren to Mt. Clemons about a week or 2 before kick off I switched to a Motel 8 near the new venue for the same price. When I went to cancell the Knights Inn room I saw that they had raised the price from 45 to 225! And the 1 in Elkhart, Ind had done the same!
maybe we will book a room for a few nights then so we dont have to pay an arm and a leg when/if we find a room
Mike Yager of Mid-America Corvettes is supposedly hosting a Long-Haulers' lunch at his facility in Effingham, IL on Monday. This is the leg from Springfield to DuQuoin. If you've never been there it's a great tour. Mostly Corvette stuff but he also has a vintage Mobil Station set up for photo ops, and a ton of other stuff to see. However, I just heard Mike just had quadruple bypass surgery. Hope everything goes well for him and he's back up and running at 100% soon.
I don't think you realize how crowded a town gets when PT comes to town. You need to book all your rooms now OR expect to sleep in your car OR in another town.
Your right, but I also recomend booking hotels through hotrods company, it might be a little more $$, but its certainly alot more fun hanging out with all the other participants in the parking lot. Its also a good feeling knowing everyone else is looking out for your car for you.
OK so people that have actually been what are we looking at cost wise here? I have always wanted to go but what does a trip like this cost ball park? The Galaxie and I are down for the drive but I would want to stay were the parties at and want to at least have an idea how much to shoot for?
Beginning to end of the Tour itself, I'd guess food, lodging, gas, some spare $ for repairs, etc., ........ $1500 to $2k if you're frugal. 'Course if you take your lady along, ................... triple it! But then YOU have a looooooong trip just to get TO the Tour, then back home!
no, i dont have any idea how crowded places get during the PT but i have no problem sleeping in my truck a few nights as long as i can get a quick shower somewhere. how do i book hotel rooms through hotrods company? and what is hotrods company? i have heard you can make the power tour for about $1000 if you really budget your money....that includes hotels everynight, gas (getting decent gas mileage), food (continental breakfast to save a few bucks), and not spending a bunch of $$$ on stuff to take home.
www.bangshift.com then look where the Forum Freaks are, but they're probably booked by now. The "Host Hotel" cancellations have been a pain in the past, supposedly easier for '10. If your within 10 miles, there will be some Tour cars.
They're talking "Familt events" the people who actually handle the Tour. I'm thinking 800-1,000 if gas stays the same as now. Of course I'm in Fla, not Ca.
Even with all six squirrels running for all they're worth, there was no hope of passing the pace car. Got passed by just about everyone that started behind me but that WAS fun!
WE just got registered!! We are in for the long haul!! IA to Mobile Al!!!! In a 40 Ford coupe. Just the wifey and me having hotel sex for a week! Booking rooms as we speek. The wife and I wanted to have a nice vacation together and this seems to hit the spot. I just hope the rain holds off this year. A black 40 coupe looks like crap after a long jont on rainy highways.
Not all but some, still plan to go to NoSurfs BBQ, HAMB drags, Goodguys KC and possibly a coupe others. But my wife is wanting to start going on some of my travels and I've done several partial PT's without her, so I would like to try a full PT, and have her along to enjoy the ride. Are you planning to attend? The first time I ever met you Denise was in you chev convert on PT 2000. then KC goodguys a year or so later. Later, Rusty.
Flamed Chevy I am not sure where you are in Middle, TN. I am down in Murfreesboro. I am thinking about the Bowling Green to Chattanooga to Birmingham legs of the tour. I am going to have to check the site for stopping points to get lodging setup. I will have to see how the job holds up and planning of my vacation.
This guy might be on to something. I did the PT back in 01 and to be honest, I thought it sucked. It was way over commercialized. Drive all day and get to see the same vendors over and over. As I recall they weren't giving any price breaks to participants either. It is open to anybody or any car. I remember a Yugo! Also when I was standing in line, (you will do that a lot), I met a school teacher who had a 85 vette that didn't have a clue about any other car and thought he had the greatest ride in the world. (I woul'd have loved to see this guy try and change a tire if he had to). The way to get a motel room is drive ahead of the main body to the next town. The rooms will be way cheaper. Just pic up the tour again when they drive bye or meet them at the morning gathering point. ( Usually a Wal mart parking lot). Now if they were to limit the event to say pre 73, it wouldn't overwhelm small towns allowing them to go more places. I would love to see another coast-to-coast cruise. Dirtbag, if you need a hand at your get together, let me know.
