Sorry dont shoot me over this post...I picked it up off a site i go to...I for one would love to live in So-Cal been there a few times.
So what, the state's going to add a task force to come inspect every hot rod out there to determine if the frame under it is original or not? Somehow I can't see them having the money to pay anyone to inspect them, they'll leave it to the same people who verify your vin or serial number now. Which means it will vary from inspector to inspector whether you can p*** off a custom frame as an original. What bothers me more is this emissions kit deal. So what, if you build a car that's ***led current year, you can only put a GM crate motor in it? And only that specific motor or kit? That doesn't seem right, it shouldn't matter if the motor's an electric hair dryer, or a Hemi, if you can make it p*** the emissions test without all that ********. Reading this thread did make me think of a new take on an old joke, though. The Californian dream - 10 million illegals crossing back home with a politician under each arm.
on top of the contruction qualifications/verifications is people that we all know who did not fully disclose the actual purchase price at time of registration and did not pay all taxes due at the time. the world is changing rapidly, and not all in our favor. watch your step, Big Brother is watching you!
This law "will apply to vehicles that were previously registered or cl***ified under erroneous or illegal cir***stances." "If you have knowingly made any false statement or knowingly concealed any material fact in any do***ent filed with the Department of Motor Vehicles or the California Highway Patrol, you will need to apply for amnesty. " If you did not break the law when registering, you've got nothing to worry about.
Bingo! These threads here and in other forums that ask, in essence; "How do I get around the law when ***ling/registering a vehicle?" just kill me. Do it legally. What's the problem with that, folks? The "great" Boyd Coddington got his nuts in a vise when he misrepresented a LOT of builds as something they were not, as did other high-profile builders - hence, the "harsh" laws California has enacted concerning this. Plus more and more States are looking hard at these "***le services" like Broadway. Several States do not honor their paperwork at all! So, what is doing it right worth to a car builder, versus "getting around" things?
Yeah right. At the rate they are spilling in to here, Pretty soon there isn't gonna be room for ****.
last year the population actually went down for the first time in history...now, if we can just make this a trend
Geez, I'm just venting a little. No need to get all ****hurt. I'm a Cali boy born and raised. But face it, We have ridiculous taxes, and a lot of BS laws when it comes to automobiles that most other states don't have.
I've always made sure the cars I buy are right when I buy them to avoid any trouble down the raod. If there was no ***le, I did not buy the car or I asked the DMV what I needed to get it right. Here in Texas most people at the DMV will help you. In fact the vehicle registration office has about 2 dozen framed pics of old cars displayed on their walls they helped get legalalized. All you gotta do is ask. No sense in trying to beat the law. Looks like all the hot rod rebels with bad *** criminal wannabe at***udes are facing the reality of life in the outlaw lane. Lets keep our hobby honest so we can keep it alive. It's that simple. mikey
I know it. But, I'm not ready to throw in the towl just yet. I think that, with the right leadership, this could be a great state once again. Vote for me when I run for governor.
You would be surprised at some of the taxes and vehicle restrictions and regulations that many other states have. Since joining the HAMB three years ago, I've been amazed at what some other states throw at you. The wife is always looking into moving somewhere else, maybe a state that has zero state taxes. While that's fine and well, I always have to remind her of what you give up. To save on state taxes, do I want to shovel snow, or get eaten buy bugs everytime I go outside, or deal with this thing I hear about called "humidity"...???? <table cl***="weatherBox" border="0"><tbody><tr><td cl***="weatherHead">Weather:</td><td align="center" width="10"></td><td cl***="weatherContent">PASADENA, CA | Now: 69ºF </td></tr></tbody></table>I'm not going anywhere, and I've never had a h***le with DMV ever, and I've been driving hot rods since 1966 here.
I know the feeling. I decided to go back to school and I couldn't even get in to any cl***es this winter session. Damn school is overcrowded. College ****s. But it is worth it for mo money.
well i gess we'r pretty lucky in iowa, we can buy a car fill out the paperwork thru the dmv and as long as we have a bill of sale and a $50.00 bond from an insurance company we're back on the road. it does take a while and an inspection from a dmv officer but the car doesn't even have to be able to drive.i have done several and no problem, actually easy. i guess the don't mind another car for yearly $ off plates. now with the frame most of the cars from the 20-40's didn't even have a ***le just a reg and no vin on them. mabe i'm comparing apples to oranges but that's how it works here. by the way i've been to cali and loved your state but alot of cars on the roads. and i didn';t see a damn snow shovel any where you lucky SOB's
Wonder if they will set up at the entrance to events like the LARS checking registration and sniffing. Could make for a smaller turn out of cars!
They already have Highway Patrol go to motorcycle events and check for stolen parts and aftermarket frames p***ed off as originals. The proof is on you they just write you up and impound your bike. The new law will open the door to Highway Patrol at all car shows, writing people up and hoping that you will pay up. Enjoy Comrades - You voted for the crooks in Sacramento.
I first ran into trouble when I installed a 56, chevy 265 in my Model A. I had bought the stock A from a car dealer, drove it for awhile with the 4 banger in it. Then yanked the banger and put in the chevy, I realized I didnt hav a frame number on the car anymore. The Model A was registered to the engine #! The DMV came up with all kinds of crazy stuff they didnt know what to do. Amazingly I finally got it fixed up from help of an understanding, and helpful manager, in the small office in Fontana. this was in 1957, I always went back to Fontana.
I know lots of highway patrolmen and they all say that most hot rods are well built and safe, due to the fact that most owners/drivers are guys who make stuff right, not dangerous. I haven't been pulled over in 20 years. They can tell by looking at your car's quality that it's almost a "given" that the wiring, welds, ***embly, and attention to detail is right on. It's the rat rod clowns that has set back much of what the public and the police see as a decent hobby. With the combination of my gray hair and a nice '34, they just leave me alone. If any rodders are h***led, it's usually because the rodder has copped an at***ude. Most cops aren't jerks unless they are met with an "at***ude". As far as some highway patrol crew combing the car shows for violations, it just isn't gong to happen. Most of the time the car owner is elsewhere in the show, and NO cop is going to start going through a car without the owner's permission.
Try Texas. Yea, in Houston it gets humid, thank God for A/C. No state tax though and we'll probably be the last state to have it, even then. Too many old turds runnin' things. I can guarantee you that if you are living in a home, you could sell it and buy a bigger home in Texas and have major money left over. My brother sold a home in San Diego for $400 K and got a bigger one here for $250 K. Cost of living in Cali is a bad joke being played on you guys, as well as real estate prices. Yea, it's 69 there today, but how much are you paying for it? As for the Cali DMV, every state will follow sooner or later, but as of now, all the **** being shoveled down you guys throats would have made me move a long time ago. But you can't blame them for going after all the money that was basicly stolen from them all those years past.
Beware they do it here. The d.o.t. and cops set a sniffer road block and inspection on the only exit out of car shows and check each car for proper issues. If you dont p*** its a fine for every infraction. They can and do change laws as they see fit. I was at the largest auto flea market in Ontairo a number of years back and the cops put a drinking and driving check at the main exit. This caused a 5 to 6 hour back up trying to leave the park.
We need to remember that, while we think of ourselves as a separate group of people, the m***es just see us all as "those car/bike people". Ricers, bikers, rat rodders, rat bikers, bro's, muscle car guys, bombers, lowriders, chainers, whatever, we are often seen as all one. We ALL need to make sure that we work within the laws, and if the law is bad, to work together to change the laws. This is not time to panic over rumors.
I've lived here 46 years and with all that's here in California (NOT "Cali" ),I really don't want to live anywhere else. <form id="u_63794-ulm-full" cl***="y-ulm y-ulm-default" action="#" method="get"> San Jose, CA </form>59°f Cloudy Today 58° / 45° Tomorrow 62° / 43° Day After 64° / 45°
They already do it at the bike shows. Under the guise of looking for stolen parts anything to create revenue is fair game. Your presence is not needed as bikes are easy to check. For cars a simple check of the license plate compared to a view in a mirrow of your TCI frame under the car will warrant the impound. I cannot believe that SEMA suggested this travesty. It shows that they only care about the commerce and not the rights of the car loving citizen. Being forced to drive an emission compliant fuel injected chevy powered gl*** car isn't exactly HAMB friendly. Maybe good business for SoCal Speed Shop but the avarage car guy got shafted.
The fact is, that none of this applies to me. I have a legally registered and insured '34 so all this is not a factor in my life. But, for those of you who this might have trouble with this, may I suggest that everyone needs an ****ysis of facts that is more than a guess. Facts are sometimes confused with theories or just gossip. I'm not certain that we know what's what here. Honestly, I don't. It must be spelled out somewhere and hopefully I can, or someone can boil this down to more than just theories being batted around. Again, while this doesn't apply to me, it is important to get this cleared up so everyone knows how to proceed. Now, you can continue with the California bashing...carry on
Directly from SEMA's website: Option One Option 2 Option 3 So the way I understand it is either you better be one of 500 lucky folks, have an all original steel hot rod, or your going to have to put on emissions equipment. There is no word on if an out of state replica would be compliant or not. So if you have a special constructed vehicle ***led after 1961 (First year of California emissions requirements) your going to have to start putting on emissions equipment. Also from what I read there isn't very clear information on if a replacement frame or body would void your current registration. More research will be needed.
