  12. lorodz ...

    The R word is Rat.

I won't go as far to say that a "Mexican blanket interior" equates to the car being labeled a "Rat Rod" ... but I won't say they were necessarily a "Traditional Hot Rod & Custom" thing either.

I've looked through hundreds of '40s & '50s Rodding publications (Throttle, HotRod, R&C, CarCraft, & other "little page" magazines) and can't recall ever seeing any blanket seat covers ... I'd surmise that the use of sarapes to cover seats was typically just a temporary thing ... while the owner saved up enough $$$ for an upholstery job.

haha, off the beaten path in Ensenada is like off the beaten path at Disneyland. ALL of Ensenada is a beaten path. The blankets work like they should though, eh? :)

"Every pound you could take off the car made it faster. All the fenders, the running boards, even the upholstery came off. That's how the serape blanket came in. I used my Navy blanket; I came home with it from the service and used it for my seat cover."

I think they have the "real deal" blankets here in town at the flea market every weekend or in a couple of shops in town.

The local upscale men's store also sells unbrushed Pendleton blanket material by the yard that makes nice inserts http://www.kraffs.com/

  24. unkledaddy ... Yep, I've read that same "The Blackie Gejeian Story" article (it was written by Dick Martin and appeared in the October 2008 issue of ROD&Custom) ... in fact, that article included a 1947 pic of Blackie's car ... complete with the NAVY blanket:

Ironically, the caption under this photo read: "I still call myself the King of the Rat Rodders," laughed Blackie. "I built a rat rod in 1945; built it to race, not for show, although I did later. I went to El Mirage with it in 1947, won the Oakland Roadster Show with it in 1955, and still have it today."

Again, I'm not saying they didn't exist ... but could somebody please post some '30s, '40s, or '50s photographs of a Dry Lakes car, Hot Rod, or Custom with a Mexican blanket (serape) seat cover.

You might as well go with a good upholstery job for the price of some Pendleton blankets

So today we've learned that not only are mexican blankets "traditional" but so are rat rods. If you listen closely you can hear the sound of ulcers forming in the belly of the "'fill in the blank' ain't traditional" types everywhere.
