In the ancient methods of making leather, fresh skins are soaked in urine to remove the hair. The raw hides are then kneaded in dung, or soaked in a solution of animal brains to make them supple and decay resistant.

    Is that at Lucha VaVOOM?

My daughter lives in El Lay and was sitting in the front row at Lucha VaVOOM a couple of years ago when two of the midget wrestlers fell outta the ring and landed in her lap, busting the chair and soaking her in sweat. Ha

The "ancient" methods go back to pre-history, but small scale leather-makers may still use them, particularly in poor areas of the world. In the Middle ages lye was found useful for hair removal, and tannin from tree bark (vegetable tanning) for curing. Chromium salt (mineral tanning) began to used in the industrial age, and is a much faster process. Chrome tanned skins are blue and need additional dye for color.

  10. It is likely serapes have been thrown over seats as a temporary cover till the owner of a HotRod could do better, has been going on for ever but I am remembering the trend of these being used in auto interiors began in the late 60's Hippie/ Van movement.
Some good looking use of the blankets/serapes (whatever they are) posted here so keep the pictures coming.

    AH HA!
even my upholstery guy didn't know that one. I want to do this in my '47, but wanted it fitted, aka cut and sewn. Is one type better to use than another, meaning a serape vs a ??

or is there any material out there that looks like a Mexican blanket, that could be used for upholstery?

I don't think the Falsa type blankets will last that long if properly upholstered, they are very course woven and pull easy. mind you i have been using them for 'throw over' seat cover with two dogs so i guess they take a hammering. the Serapes seem heavier duty, i just couldn't live with that much colour in my car i dont think.

  23. I've thought about the reason why serapes might of even became involved w/ cars, period. It makes sense that they were more of a seat cover for your new TJ interior. If you were in the know, you bought your own upholstery thread(you need scissors to cut it) They were saving money, can't blame 'em. My Dad & Uncle had their 57 Sedan Delivery upholstered black, in the Early 60's. Newspaper rolled up & lit for a heat gun- to stretch the headliner. WOW!
