Let's try this again...How people/places/things in our hobby are pronounced...

We've grown up reading (because we only had the printed page) about people, places and parts makers in our hobby over the decades... some of the names we couldn't pronounce...or...assumed they were pronounced a certain way.

I've learned thru TV and conversations that some of those names I have pronounced over the years were wrong...Phonics is your friend.

The last thread I did about this was shut down, I'm assuming, because of silliness or drama...let's not let that happen again.

Educate those here how certain names of people, places and parts in our Hot Rod history are pronounced.

    Some we know are Weiand = Why-and...Milodon = Mile-o-don...Muroc = Murroc(purr)? or Mureoc(pure)?

How do you pronounce Blackies last name?...you get the drift...

You guys fill in the blanks on your own enunciations...

Yes Larry, that was always the problem with the printed page...or any reading for that matter!
I admit I used to say Phaeton wrong...and I thought Lil' John's name was BUTT-era!
This could be an interesting and informative thread if given the chance.

Hi Larry! How about sedanette? I've always pronounced it just as you would the word sedan, with an "et" at the end with the accent on "et". But a couple of old-timers have corrected me, saying that the correct pronunciation is "se-de-net", again with the accent on the end syllable. Anybody?

P.S. - This isn't easy...explaining how to pronounce words with no verbal communication! Hahahahahaha! Also with words I rarely use..."pronunciation", "enunciation", "accent", "syllable", etc. Had to check myself a couple of times!

Good input, j-dogg. Concerning Alex Xydias, I understood that a name that starts with the letter "X" is usually pronounced as a "Z", as in Zay-dee-us. Or, another...Xaviera Hollander...(a female author) Xaviera would be pronounced as Zave-ee-air-a. I could be wrong.

I met an old racer who actually has his name in the rod book called "Cool car Square roll bars". I bought his Olds stuff including Gotha rockers.
    ...... he said Go-tha.

    Oh no. Was I wrong?

    Ganahl??????

    Is it G'n-arl?

I like this thread. Living in Australia I rarely hear a lot of these words but I have read so many and become very familiar with my own pronunciations of them that I never consider that I could be wrong. Keep 'em coming.

I was corrected once on the pronunciation of Jaguar. I was saying "jag-wire". Of course, that's wrong...jag-you-are or jag-war is closer.

I heard a guy one time call mooneyes "moonies". Also Porsche Fuchs alloy wheels are pronounced "fyooks" or "fooks". Going back to a previous post, I've heard people mispronounce Weiand "we-and".
