Let's try this again...How people/places/things in our hobby are pronounced...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 3wLarry, Jan 4, 2010.

  1. Phaeton is Fay-A-Ton...not Fay-Ton...or maybe not?

Whenever I see a VW 'Phaeton' (I live in Auburn Hills, we see a lot of VW/Audi/Bentleys around these parts) I want to plink off the letters and rearrange them to read 'Phat One'...:D

It started out as Willis, the guys last name. Then post war officially became Willeez, due to mis-pronouncing it by the general public.:D

Yeah, I guess it's French like Chevrolay instead of Chev ro let. But I have heard it pronounced with the "t" on the end.

Hey striper! I suddenly realized that even some of our methods of sounding out these words might really scrooooo you up! HA!

This thread is useful...I'd hate to meet Pete Chapouris some day, and say, "Nice to meet you, Mr. shape-or-ice"! Hahahahaha!

Sometimes, I think that geographical location makes a difference. Isn't "coupe" pronounced coop in America, and coop-ay in Europe?

Chassis? I pronounce it as "Chas-E"...
but I think all the guys who say "Jag-U-are" call it a "shassy".
Maybe its just a North American/European thing.

"Bloody right, my Jag-U-are az al-u-mini-um shassy!
Ave look...tha' by Petrol tank..." ;)

Tudor is just a Ford abbreviation/name...unless your into British Royalty.

My Dad and his car buddies (Dad was born in 23) Started a club in 37 or 38. They are all gone now but they said GOw, as in GO Cat GO. Might be where the term came from now that I think about it....

Once a cat came by and pronouned it gOW, as in OW I hit my finger. They all laughed and said "He problably calls dagmars boobies, too!"

I'm glad this was mentioned! Is it Eye-ski or Is-key? Baskerville said Xydias rhymed with Wittiest!! And I almost hate to admit I called it Eldebrock for years.

I've heard Chevy pronounced "Shiivee". Car dealer Cal Worthington is the worst offender.
How about misspelled car words. The one that peeves me is Camero.

Crower Cams- Usually pronounced to rhyme with "pow", but I was told by an old timer it is pronounced like the bird and that the early Crower Cams sticker featured a Crow holding a cam in its feet! Never seen it. Anyone recall seeing that design?
