Poor structural repairs. But it ALWAYS depends on the price. Anything can be fixed. So I guess my real answer is, when the price is not what I'm willing to pay

Looked at a sweeeet '49 Buick Roadmaster last year that the owner restored and then passed away. I test drove it with one of his kids and made a VERY fair offer of $4,500 (they were asking $5). He told me to call the 'lawyer' of the estate. Well...long story short, the a$$hat lawyer was holding out. 4 months go by and I gave up...8 months later (after my '53 was bought and in the garage), the family calls and wanted me to come get it for the offer.

SOOO...now, my biggest turn off now is 'ohh, you're gonna have to talk to the lawyer'

In a "finished" car...cigarette/cigar/pipe smoke. My dad chain-smoked when I was a kid and the smell of it makes me very ill now.

No shit, small Chevy is one of the most popular engines since '55, after the flathead.

 

If it's a project, I can tolerate alot if the price is right. But if it's a driver, I wont touch it if the windshield is cracked or there is no spare or jack.

 

17 inch plus wheels (unless factory), poor attempt at body work by the current owner, and incorrect seats.

 

Plastic interior pieces. nothing worse than seeing a sweet car then it has 80's plastic on seat rails and really fugly shifter console and mismatched steering columns.

 

Sun roofs. Especialy crappy aftermarket ones

 

First thing I look at is quality of the welding work ...... if it looks like bird shit ... it usually is.

i think the one thing that is a super turn off for me (me being a ford guy) when they put a chevy motor in a ford car i just look away and look at the next car

I bought a 37 Ford once that sat in a garage since 1964. I opened the drivers side door and noticed cat skeletons on the seat. Cat bones and a clump of after birth. It was a nice solid car and I bought it but I almost puked getting it out of the garage. The old man that I bought from said he always wondered where kitty went.

 

The shit that comes out of the sellers mouth and his "expert" opinion.

 

Bad looking flames, grafix, wheels can KILL a nice car.

i agree with the 350 stuff to a certain point. i get the fact that the 350 is an insanely reliable and well built unit that is plentiful and easy to work on and build-hence the popularity.. but i draw the line where being reasonable comes into play. i guess for me it's seeing a "barn find" 32 with everything in the world going for it in terms of style, history and the whole ball of wax, except a big ugly orange thing in the front....

come on, you've got a great car-go the extra mile and rebuild the flathead, i don't care how much you drive it (not THAT much i'm sure) you can make a flatty reliable too! it doesn't have to be a crate motor in there!!
..just an example.

i don't care if you take a dime a dozen car and rip out the 235 to replace it with a more reliable and powerful 350 because you drive it, just keep the hood shut! haha.

 

I opened this with the impression that we were supposed to tell what would make us not PURCHASE a car or project.........

If that's the case, about 90% of you guys must not even own cars, because apparently, other people can't build them properly for you.

If you don't like the seats, steering column, wheels, interior, bodywork, engine compartment, tires, exhaust, shifter........negotiate a deal if you can, and change them. Good lord, I thought we were car builders here......

harsh. yeah, it was meant to be a light-hearted thread about some of the most common blunders people make that people like us who get it notice most often. no shit we're car builders, no need to take everything so seriously.

 

Shit you'd all hate my car, I'm one of those people who thinks he can "save" a car:
Its a 55 1st series chev pickup with:
fresh primer (so far so good)
SBC with edelbrock manifold etc
t350!!
hideous 100 spoke lowrider wheels with low pro tires
after market wheel (its at least mooneyes)
diamond tuck velour seat (at least its the original bench)
checkerplate rear bed (my own personal pet hate - checkerplate in traditional rides!)

 

well, at least if you're gonna do it, you went for it.
