I am well aware that issues concerning ebay and craigslist are kind of frowned down upon here and please believe that it is not my intent to grossly break the rules on the hamb forum. But i figure i will get an honest opinion on this subject before anywhere else.

I put one of my projects up on ebay a couple of days ago, and in less then 24 hours its sold. The auction clearly stated that i required a $500 deposit through paypal and buyer to be responsibile for all shipping. I am pasting the buyers response that was sent after his commitment to buy. It seems a little fishy to me, but what the hell do i know? i usually sell parts. And this is my first vehicle. I would appreciate any honest opinions and thanks for the help.

Oh yeah I forgot to add that the buyer is from the united kingdom, not that i have a problem with that, but i though i should add the info.

    Sellers response

Now that I have committed to buy your item, please send me your name and address to send you a cashier check or money order, Payment will be issue out in full, Sorry for any inconvenience if I have breach your sales Terms and condition to make a deposit. I did not have pay pal account. Note that I will take care of the shipping and the shipping cost will be included in other to let you complete this process.
You don’t need to ship this item after payment is been receive and cleared at your bank you will then need to contact my shipper for pick up. I will enclose his information with the payment, his person to contact after payment is receive so that he can have it ship to my son. As soon as you get the check let me know. Thanks

    Uh yea... duh!!

Put a complaint in to ebay and demand a deposit, if they don't you can get your listing fees refunded.

You'll only get screwed if you do what the "buyer" says.

That doesn't look good. The response is way to generic. Most people pay the deposit right away using pay pal anyways.

that is a very well known scam....

this "shipping cost" is included in the fake cashiers check...
then the "shipper" contacts you and you pay him out of your pocket... then after he is gone with your money... you get a call from the bank telling you the cashiers check was a fake....

  8. 1)if he is the high bidder he should already have access to you address
    2) some of his wording makes no sense to me

tell him to go to hell

Lots of scammers from or claiming to be from the United Kingdom. I would bet money it's a scam. I place add's on Fordbarn.com listing stuff for sale and everytime I get the same ******** about wanting to purchase my part and sending payment in full. It's word for word the same everytime. I never reply back

  10. contact EBAY fraud dept about possible problem and follow their ideas, that should couver you ***

  11. it's a scam, they'll send you a deposit in a form of a cashiers check/MO and it takes a while for it to clear, then they'll send you another check for the full payment or an additional(inconvience bonus to you) which takes a while to clear in the meantime you ship the vehicle and still wait for the bank to clear the checks and the car is shipped already, the checks bounce and the car is gone and you'll be liable for costs to the shipping company...seen it before,BIG SCAM! (hint:"you will need to contact my shipper")since you arrange the shipping you'll be liable for the cost, not the buyer!

Believe it or not this is the second time in 5 days that this is happened with this same auction. The first instance, the buyer hit buy it now, and then turned right around and closed his account on ebay,

The response you received is spelled S-C-A-M.

Knowing that, there is only one person who can screw you. You saw his face in the mirror this morning.

The word "Item" is a dead give away for me..if he cant say what it is..its a scam

by the 9th word i knew this was a sham

your not selling an "Item"..hell i have 100's of "Items" for sale..this is a word that is used in all of these scams..they never come out and say I am interested in your 1934 Ford..or other discriptive wording..because they just copy and respond back without ever reading what is even said in your ad, Hell he probably responded to 100 ads that day with that same line of BS..just hoping for one hit..thats all he needs is one

  21. I think its a scam, but, send him a note back asking him to call you. A calling card will make this cheap for him. Alternatively, you can ask to call him. Either way, if its a scam, he won't want to call.
You could also take the cheque, call the issuing bank, cash it and wait until it clears before doing anything. I'd open a new account before doing this.

In no way spend ANY of your money to do anything. If he calls a shipper, HE PAYS. If asked for money, you run away.

I stroked the last guy who did this to me for over two weeks. He did send the check, drawn on a NY travel agency's bank account, and when I started giving him excuses why I couldn't cash his check right away he gave me a sob story about his wife being involved in a "fatal accident" and he needed the extra money to help pay for her life saving surgery. Must have been some miracle doctor doing it. I told him I hoped his wife could hang in there until I got home from a business trip the next week.
