BTT, Help us preserve the history, we are trying to gather info and photos of former race cars and drivers in the state of Kentucky in all forms of motorsports. Ghost tracks in the state as well.
Dale Funk is about to be wingin' it without the wing on the English, Frakes & Funk Kentucky Moonshiner digger in this fine shot from the 1976 Nationals. This actually was Funk's last race as he had announced his retirement beforehand, and it may have been a timely decision.
Cool site. Good luck with getting some additional photos from others. This car found on your site is pretty wild/scary!!! It would be interesting to know more about it.
Redd's Auto Parts line held that distinction in the early 70s. Although the decade started with an Eldon Huffman-driven Challenger (made famous at the US Nationals for its suspension breaking, body bending starting line attics)
Al, Should have known you would post something with Kentucky Moonshiner on it! Next time your in the area (central Kentucky) let the Rod Kings know and we will bring you a jug.
In the mid-70s the Bluegrass Shaker of Turner and Commes was billed as the only AA/FC from Kentucky. In 75 Jackie Price at wheel of Bluegrass Shaker Vega won the Div 3 flopper title. Pictured Monza debuted in 76 driven by ex-Tommy Ivo crew chief and Hot Tuna T/F driver John "Tarzan" Austin. Car finished 2nd in Div 3 that season behind Stan Bowman... Jackie Price and his team bought Eldon's old Challenger and raced it as the Bluegrass Shaker. The Vega was not NHRA legal; the wheelbase was too long. Eldon passed away around 1980 and Redd's Auto Parts went out of business around 1990.
The BLUEGRASS SHAKER that Turner & Coomes owned made the trip to the new owners Rapaci & Casiere from NJ and became JERSEY JUMPER MONZA driven by Jim Grace from 77-78
Cool thread keep the info coming...I remember the 55 chevy and where the gas station used to be. Friend of mine worked there...miss the bluegrass raceway.
Here are some of my dad's 1983 Thunderbird. It had a 533 Boss 429 with a B and J clutchless transmission. He tried to run IHRA Pro Stock during the 83-84 season but just had to big of a budget.
we raced at cedar creek (bullitt) dragway, near shepherdsville, ky. during my high school years. i'm not sure when the track closed down, but it's been many years. it was in the late 60's when my brother and i ran there. i don't have any pictures, unfortunately. i think my brother still has one or 2 of the trophys though.
that web site gave me cold chills. i remember many names and cars from the '50s and '60s. my dad worked with joe williamson. i also raced at the (louisville) fairgrounds motor speedway for a season. we had a friend who raced powder puffs in the '50s and '60 there, and pretty much dominated. her name was ruth (mother goose) loenhardt, from mt. washington, ky. my sister is married to her nephew. i will see if there is a way to find some good pics from the day.she was my parents age, but she was the coolest woman i knew. for years whenever i would see her she would remind me of the time i gave her a ride to mt. washington on the back of my panhead chopper and the oil spray ruined her clothes. her husband harold leonhardt ran a junk yard outside mt. washington. i worked for him at one point in time. damn, this is all like from another lifetime.
Dads car from mid to late 60's. Check out Kentucky Motorsports website and go to Old Timers outstanding pictures and information.
