Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Royalshifter, Jan 27, 2008.

  1. My favorite is the Miss Deal 53 stude gasser! and the new Hippie Hemi digger

  2. A couple of early balsa kits, the Hot Rod A-V8 from 1947 & the Airflo J-V8 from 1950.

  3. Very cool thread!
This looks like Dave Stuckey's Deuce before it became "The Lil Coffin". I had no idea there was ever a kit of this version!
My dad got out of the wholesale model kit business (it was a sideline for him) just as AMT started to get popular here. He did get me a few of the Aurora, Monogram and Revell kits though. I used to order once a month through Auto World through the '60s - great memories! ...Wish I had kept the boxes at least!!

Mazooma1: What a fantastic collection of the original boxes you have.

You have to love Hawks gimmick "HAWK'S NEW TORQUE REACTION DRIVE Non-Electric". It was a wind-up rubber band ! Honest. Also used in the "Alky Saltzer" kit.

This thread is addictive! The temp outside warmed up to 35 degrees and it's sunny out so I took my roadster out for a long drive. Now I'm back here spending too much time on this again. I can't stop myself. Here's more box art I found on google. :)

Great thread! I think that this one deserves another run (despite the front wheel "smoke").

Deucegasser- Those are 3 great examples from different companies of outstanding box art. When I was a kid, and today as a man, will always walk by the model section just to check out the box art. Models with photographs of cars, or their kits appeal to me much less. I've purchsed dozens of kits just because of the good box art.
Model companines should have never abandoned box art, big mistake.
Someone may not like the idea of a Stud funny but, how can you NOT like the box art on Miss Deal? fantastic.
Now, because of this thread, I need to dig out some of my collection to photo and share.

OK, here are some of my vintage kits. I'm 49 so my stuff is a bit newer than others. Still, other than the repop of the 'attemp" car, the newest one shown is from 1972.

My Aunt Mary worked for Aurora on Long island back in the day when I was growing up. Because of that, I was able to get anything from them for half price. I bought ( and got as gifts) a lot of Aurora stuff including slot cars, n scale trains and model kits. She would sent me catalogs and I remember all the art from the Aurora kits shown here. I started building models around 1968 at 8 years old. Even by then, most of the car kits Aurora offered looked so dated at that time to me that I hardly bought or built any of them. MPC was my favorite company but, I like AMT too. By the early 70s, I started getting into Revell stuff because of their funny cars, etc.
To this day, a model kit is still my favorite gift. Just seeing a wrapped present shaped like a model and being able to shake it and hear it is a wonderful feeling ( "which one is it"?).

I've been collecting pics of this stuff off ebay for a few years now, including my own stuff! Here are some of my own and some I've saved. I don't think these exact ones have been on here yet.

A few more of my favorite hot rod oriented ones.
