I bought this old trunk at a swap meet some 30 yrs ago because i trhought it would be handy and look good in the box of my 28 RPU. I've always wondered what it was from. The st****** is aliminium, the latches are very stylish finger pull type and on the sides there are heavy leather carring straps. Anyone seen these?
Pics ****, try to get better detailed ones

This Trunk Looks familiar. a 1936 Packard I worked on, had one the same. I'm not sure if it was factory or an ***essory part.

Here's a few more detailed pics. The latch might be the best clue.

Most old car trunks have a decal or sticker inside the lid with the maker's logo, name and address.
That is a really pretty one and would have been fairly expensive, perhaps as much as $12.50 back when.

Wow .... nice to see another of the Metal Bilt trunks appearing in a cool hot rod. I was fortunate enough to locate mine about 2 years ago, and for a very reasonable $125. The owner had had it for nearly 25 years, and was moving.

Turns out these are pretty valuable on EBAY. I saw two there go for over $600 apiece last year.

From the research I came up with, Metal Bilt did these trunks from around 1928 to 1933 or so. Few survived, and those that have are rarely in as good as shape as yours, or mine for that matter. I do have a few small dings to handle, and need to come up with a key, which may have to be custom built. My local locksmith ... a very experienced place too .... was unable to make one. Not sure what to do now for the key.

Hope the mfg. decal is of use to you?

  9. I have a several trunks and the largest looks exactly like yours with the same trim and latches. I want to say somewhere I determined it was from a 33 Buick but I wouldn't be suprised if it like alot of the trunks were aftermarket items added at the dealers and such. Here's a pic of my '31 Pontiac with a trunk I bought from an antique store and redone. I think trunks are cool lookin'

  10. The trunk is probably an aftermarket accessory, not specific to any make or model. Most '20s and early '30s cars, especially the bigger cars, had a trunk rack that folded up out of the way when not in use and folded down so a trunk could be tied down on it.

Allrighty....there we have it. Thanks for clearing up a 30 year old mystery. I had a hunch it was aftermarket but didn't know it was that old thou. Mine is in minty shape. I obviously repainted it but i remember the original paint wasn't that bad either. It does have the original leather strap handles and wood flooring thou untouched. The paint inside is original to. Thanks for your post, appreciate it.

I just bought a 27 chevy 2 door sedan, and this trunk came with it. All the brackets are there, but the trunk has seen better days. Maybe I can clean it up, and use it for wall art.

It does, indeed look like 33 buick, except the Buicks did not have the side handles.

Well stupid me. I went out with a trouble light and had a closer look. I did find a tiny decal covered in black overspray. Managed to clean it off best i could. Yes it's a METAL BUILT trunk. But mine was made in Toronto Canada.
Oh and i have a key for the lock as well.

Looks like a Kari Keen. They opened like that. I have one for a '35/'36 Ford (it's for sale).

Come to think of it there must be more manufacturers that made trunks.
Got a cool trunk? Let's see them.
