If your looking for that worn thin paint look it is lots of over wet sanding.

What are you talking about? You're not trying to make something shiney, unshiney are you? I don't think many guys here are into that faux-patina stuff, the goal is to make your car look better not worse.

Four posts before I could finish typing mine, maybe I was wrong?

I thought about it a bit. I guess it might be alright if you were trying to match a fender or something to something with worn paint.

I'll put a third vote on that. I can't for the life of me understand why guys think the wore assed old paint look is cool. It still looks like wore assed old paint that someone was too cheap or lazy to do something about.

I usually drink a lot on the weekend and have "that look" by Monday morning......

  17. It adds character and you don't have to go somewhere and find the same "in" this year color on six cars. Explained simply it adds contrast but one must have done the necessary wheels, tires, suspension and engine to bring out this contrast. I like to say I have graduated the shiny 101 and 102 class. Perfect can always be appreciated but comes with worries too! Since body and paint are so expensive guys are opting for a change with the "patina" look. Not crazy about that buzz word though, it sounds sort of feminine. If you are still confused take a look at a low mile well preserved original 30's car and see if your appreciation level don't go up!

yeah, just like a fat girl with a lazy eye and two noses has character...

  19. I've never seen a girl like that but I guess I don't hang out where they might be lurking!

  20. im a shiny paint type of guy but dont mind patined look if its real. im not one for the fake made look. it has to be earned. its ok on old trucks, but hot rods should be nice. my 2 cents.

If you want to fake it use layers of different paint and work through them with compounds, scothbrite pads, and sandpaper.

If you don't want to fake it hunt down some tin that has been setting for a long time...

C'mon guys, think about it... what looks cooler than an old '39 Chevy truck advertising your shop, looking like it was lettered back in the 60's? When it's done tastefully, I'm talkin' about. =)

Do you have a shop that was actually around "back in the 60's"?
It's another done to death trend that can't go away fast enough....

In gun and knife circles, the natural patina makes old ones worth ten times more. If you refinish an antique gun or knife (or even try to clean it), you destroy the value. With cars and trucks, it's hit or miss I think. On vehicles with significant history, I think they should be left as is and kept as nice as can be without destroying the history. Barn find type hot rods are hit and miss, maybe yes, maybe no. Old trucks always look good with the original weathered paint, it adds character. Kustoms should always be shiny. That's just what Kustoms are about. FAKE patina on the other hand is the single most retarded thing I can think of having to do with what we all love.

Don't listen to the naysayers, inkdaddy. Do whatever YOU like, it's YOUR vehicle, not theirs! LOL.

Anyway, multiple layers of different colored paint, followed by sanding should bring you the desired results.

Good luck, and post some pix.

I think its that whole "Rat Rod" fad, its fucking weak, wasnt the Hamb about Traditional Rods and Kustoms?, not paying extra to make your car look like crap? Im not a shiny type gut, I like the glow of satin but not the fake patina or the air brushed rust, come on people ..... I would rather see a kar with real patina, that fake shit just makes me loose all respect for the car
