Holy Crap! I just had a flashback! I was at that race in 1973 at Hawaii Raceway Park.I lived on the windward side and remember the Camaro.Wow!! what memories...

  8. These, and many more, are from the "Big Yohns" site, with plenty of other WAY cool early photos...spend some time there.

Here are a few photos for funny car fan and historian Dennis Doubleday. He asked about floppers down under and I dug through my files and found these for now. I do have more somewhere but this will have to do for now.

First up is the Martin/Miles/Wileman Shaker Holden Monaro. Built by Ian Splatt at Dragway it had a big block Chevy for power. This is an ealry photo of the car taken at Calder Park in Melbourne. The next two are from the 1970 Natioanls at Surfers Paradise.

Here we have Ray Zygadlo's Demon's Disciple 1968 Valiant (I know it looks like a Dart but in Oz we used the Dart front fenders and hood on our locally produced Valiants). This car was originally built by Graham Withers from a stock body shell provided by Chrysler Australia. 392 powered it barely saw the track while Withers owned it and then went to Sydney to Zygadlo. This shot is from the 1972 Nationals at Surfers Paradise.

Here we have the Phillips and Lumb blown small block Holden Torana leading Norm Oakey's rear engined Goggomobile which was early hemi powered. Due to a lack of competitors in Oz the Goggo ran with the floppers. At times Oakey ran a double 6-71 package--he danced to the beat of a different drummer as did his dad Bill.

Although not an Aussie car this was the Henry Harrison driven Vulture that toured with Gene Beaver's L.A. Hooker in 1975. At a media event prior to the tourists' appearance at Adelaide International Raceway a gust of wind caught the body while the car was being towed (on the pole and not tied down) and flipped it on its back, breaking the windshield pillars and tearing both rear quarter panels from the rear of the wheel opening almost to the deck lid. I worked until about 3 in the morning glassing it back together and this photo was taken in the street outside the body shop when we rolled it out the next day. (yep, that is the old long haired me).

Hello Rooman, Happy New Year to you, the Vulture AA/FC was an ex Candies and Hughes piece driven in Australia by Henry Harrison.

Anyone know the names or story behind Giovannoni Cams? Half my wife's family are Giovannonis, so it'd be funny if it turned out to be her great grandma's bumpsticks that made Garlits so fast!

  18. Thanks a bunch, rooman !! Great stuff ! By the way, what is a Goggomobile ? I've seen photos of it before, maybe at the DRL.Would that typically fall into the fuel altered category had it raced in the states ? Thanks again. Dennis Doubleday

Photo is labeled: Inside_Candies-Hughes_Shop_Don-the_ so one could assume that is the shop.

  28. I love seeing the pics of "Nanook"... My Dad & Uncle are the Heckle & Jeckle twins that used to paint it. Bob Thompson, drew up the renderings, and they laid the paint.
