History a car plaque question..AUTOBUTCHERS

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by THAT MONSTER KID, Dec 21, 2009.

  1. I recently purchased a Autobutchers of E. LA meatclever club plaque on UK ebay (dont ask me how i stumbled upon it) and was just wondering, would it be authentic or a fraud? do clubs make plaques for collectors or friends and ***ociates? the cast seems like a newer cast to me. either that or it cleaned up real good its never had the holes drilled out to hang the plaque. has anyone else ever bought a club plaque of a legitimate club that wasnt the real deal? i bought it purely for the historical value of the Ayala's and their involvement in the kustom movement of the 50's. just lookingmfor some info. thanks guys

  3. thanks chaddilac, had a look and they do have older plaques as the link you posted shows but it says they also have the moulds for 1400 club plaques, maybe someone else will chime in with some info?

    14,000 :D

    I bet they have it!

  5. i bet they would too!

  6. Yes we have over 15,000 car club plaques and patterns. Approx. 3000 are for clubs that we made plaques for and we will not repop them for anyone but the clubs we made them for. The other 12,000 came from two companies that went out of business in the late 60's - Speed Gems and Chicago Metal Craft. We have no records as to who they were made for, how many of each, when, etc. We will reproduce them for anyone looking for a plaque from a club their dad or uncle belonged to or whatever - as long as we don't know that the club is still alive and active. For instance we have the originals for the Counts of the Coblestones, TyRods (M***.) and many others that we know are still going strong. We've made hundreds of plaques for guys looking to fill out their collection for all the plaques from say Virginia, or from a particular city, or all the clubs with a name the same as their club, etc. We also get requests from guys that are starting a club and want to know if we have a pattern for a club with their town's name on it.....

Oh, and yes we have an original Auto Butchers ELA that we got with the Chicago Metal Craft patterns, but as far as I know they are still alive so we don't reproduce it.

    OK, let the questions begin:)

The above is why we had the Viper's plaques repoped by O'Brien Truckers. We would be seriously pissed to find our exclusive artwork on anyone elses car. Dennis has cl*** and we trust him.

Just wanted to say thanks for that. And Merry Christmas too.

  8. thanks for bringing this back up guys, yeh as far as i know the autobutchers are still active hence me asking the origins of it.

59BuickWagon - do you (o'briens) or any of the defunct plaque manufacturers stamp your company name on the plaque? the one i have has no markings on it.

i think with all the horsetrading with ebay these days the plaque may have just come with a car and then the person sold the plaque on ebay.

couple of years ago there were reproductions - read copies - of the Autobutchers cc plaque
for sale on e-gay, but it was "Autobutchers LA" not ELA.
Wasnt same quality either. Can it be the same one?

On another thread a couple of weeks ago, there was a picture of a custom with what looked like an Auto Butchers plaque on the front bumper, but it looked like it had block lettering so there may be another version out there somewhere.

  12. This is why Dennis is a cl*** act and gets our business.

BTW Dennis, the original Counts plaques were cast by the Willians brothers at SDSM&T in the metalurgy dept. I happen to have one made off an original.

I have an original Auto Butcher's cleaver plaque. Bought it at a Socal swap meet about 25 years ago. Dark grey background with orange lettering.

If someone out there has an old plaque they found in a garage years ago , and is simply hanging up on the wall of their office thats one thing, but this club is active , indeed does have their name/logo trademarked/copyrighted so their stuff shouldn't be sold out on the public market.

    Same type on D. Holland's 41 Ford

Right on Rik.............I also was going to post that some of my pics of Ayala built cars had the Cleaver Auto Butchers plaque on them. Could be the Ayalas started a club like Barris did????? Maybe they were not as enterprizzzzzzing as ol George?????

  20. Like everyone else has already said,Dennis is a cl*** act.I asked him if he had the pattern for my dad's old club.He replied that he didn't have it,but might be able to find one.A few days later,he told me he found a collector that would let him use one he had to make a copy for me!How many people will go to those lengths? Thanks to dennis, dad's tribute car is now complete...

    Rik,

That's the picture I saw on an earlier post. I never realized there were that many versions of the Auto Butchers plaques.

Thanks for posting them. Now I'll have to find them to add to the car club plaque pages on our website.

The photos I posted on this thread in 2009 are gone and when I checked my website I see that I now have three versions of this plaque. I'm guessing that two of them were made to sell on eBay .....

Wonder which one Dennis has the pattern for, that would be the original, or are all three of these fake plaques?
