I never stated that I want to run with the "big dawgs" but these young kids think that their cars are top shit. I want something that looks nice and sounds nice, I plan on just a little more work than that, and yes, I can afford it without stealing the food from off of my three year olds table. This build doesn't incorporate anything wildly fanciful, "gotta make her run first right?" I plan to do just about what has been suggested here so many times over. Still, why should an official build thread have to be soooo boring, I kinda liked where this has taken me, I have learned quite a bit, and will continue to learn, even well after the car is running "didn't say done"
Oh, and sorry if it appears that I am trying to shove crazy ideas down everyones throats here at the HAMB, in fact the response is just about that of what I'd from something like this. It's why I did it really. I like to dream, it's my job you know, as a young guy.
What precipitates the "tin hat" comments is something that is apparent to us, but evidently not to you: you don't know what you're doing. You're not even the 1,000 person to have suggested most of these ideas here, and pay no attention when it can't be resolved by 2 paragraphs of fantasy. Statements like "the geometry of the ohv design doesn't really allow for more that 2 valves per cyl." glibly tossed off as if they were familiar facts merely high-light your lack of comprehension. I'm not referring to your lack of expertise in mechanical engineering - many do quite well with no such training. I mean, instead, your constant shifting of focus, complete plan reversal, lack of practicality ("I have no money, but why not make a billet engine?"), proposing investing a large sum of money in a car that will be (pardon my frankness) a big disappointment, and endless droning about irrelevant subjects. My diagnosis: Asperger's. Are you taking Ritalin?
Having watched Oprah and Dr. Phil a couple of times, I consider myself fully qualified to render the following diagnosis: http://media.www.carolinianonline.c...ttentionSeeking.Disorder.And.You-126591.shtml
IMO this needs to be closed. Panic and Wolfex1 have it nailed! Where are the mods when you need them? Sua Sponte .
HA HA HA! very funny, if it were only that simple. I suppose we come up with fantastic ideas for things that we truly don't understand, i mean look at evolution. I don't have a degree in the subject, and this is the extent of my knowledge, and I don't do this for attention, I do it for advice and guidance from the greatest generation, or so I was told to believe.
I have checked my phone and e-mail and no one has called me or made any attempt to find out if I am truly a fraudster, despite multiple accusations and attempts. I have said it before and I'll say it again, come meet me, talk to me in person, all of your fears will soon leave. Imagine how you would react to such personal attacks, this is very immature and rather unlike the community that I had envisioned here. I would leave, but despite all of the fuss I have received very good advice and help thus far with my savoy resto. For all of those involved, thanks. I guess those pictures will have to come sooner rather than later. Next post, I promise.
I really wanted to save this for when I had time to reorganize and clean some things, but it seems I am left with no choice. I have pictures here from the things that the mech. gave me that he didn't need for the work, he was even kind enough to disassemble the engine for me, gratis. I know that I need a truck, but I have a family, and so I have a minivan instead. You will see a number of different things here, disregard all that is not the plymouths. I am also helping a friend replace a bad engine for his single owner 84 rabbit gti, long story. You can see all of the crud and road tar caked on from over the years, in truth, however, there is a pristine and almost untouched surface beneath. intake and exhaust manifold, anyone want one, I'll give you a good price The flywheel, I am curious, and it has been suggested, that I lighten the fly wheel, is there a writeup on this? The head, and pay no attention to the 01' toyota MR2 spyder trunklid Basically cleaned it inside and out, and painted it with high temp paint "hindsight is 20/20 so get offa my back" the coolant neck was eaten through in some places so I fixed it with some JB weld, lets see that get eaten through. I also ran a tap through all of the plug holes slowly to make sure there was no crud and the holes would accept the plugs, when I put them in. I think that I did this about a year ago when I first got the car, and in my humble opinion, I did a pretty bang up job for a novice. I straight edged the head to make sure the mating surface was true, and that there was no warping etc. and also cleaned all of the old carbon/lead deposits from the combustion area. oil pan and various other things OLD SKOOL plates Don't judge me, this is my work bench and I do work here, there's a lot of moving parts to my life but this is the one area that is truly mine. single bbl carter I this thread truly upsets you, and if you don't like me, well get lost. Don't read it, and don't post, and don't ruin the potential knowledge gaining experience that someone else can have. If nothing else not to repeat what I have done. Thanks, Kevin
This is actually getting very entertaining. I'd kinda like to be around when your wife gets a look at the ruined interior of her mini van! Let us know how that all works out. All those parts are leftovers from what "...the mechanic didn't need..."? Like, the transmission and manifolds? I'm guessing the head off the little VW 4 cyl engine block is being used? How much JB weld will it take to adapt it to the Plymouth block, anyway? Keep the stream of (semi) conciousness coming, it's much better than the funnies!
Well, I must admit, the pictures do tell a story. Heaven help your three year old, should all those part go flying around that velour interior for some reason.
It's my mini van, I bought it, and no-one is riding in it right now, due to it being full of parts from my engine. I pulled the engine and tranny at the same time, as opposed to just pulling the engine. I sent all of it to he machinist. If I refer to the Mech, I am talking about the Machinist, they are one and the same. I can do all other required work on the vehicle, reassembly, disassembly, the only things I can't do are pretty much Machinist related because I lack the tool/knowledge necessary to do it myself. Incidentally this is the most expensive part of the rebuild process. I originally sent the 1.8 GTI block down to the Mech. to have it checked out, My friend "to whom the engine belonged to" was currently serving in Iraq, and had asked me to pick up the car. I went to Ventura, CA and drove the car all the way back, she was spitting oil out the whole damned time, bad rings? that was my assumption. Long story short the piston was slapping the head turning it to hamburger meat "consistency" the head is ruined, milling would increase the static compression ratio to waaaay more than he wanted, so I am currently also engaged in finding him a new engine. Oh and the bottom end will need machining too, it will ultimately be cheaper to just find another running engine for him and to find this one a good home "JUNK" I have more than one car, for those truly concerned an 06' suzuki reno for which I have no payments, paid off, in laymans terms, as is the van.
Focus my friend, focus! Looking at your car and work bench and reading your posts, it seems obvious that you have a difficult time organizing anything. You bounce around like a pin ball. Get your shop organized, clean out your car, make a list and prioritize it. Decide what needs to be done first and do it. If your are getting some machine work done, spend the mean time cleaning up and painting small parts. Get prepared for the next step. Buy gaskets, get torque specs, etc. etc. The whole problem you have here on this thread is that you can't stay on topic, therefore, most of the advice you receive is either blown off or goes right over your head. This in turn frustrates the posters that are trying to help you and soon you will be on your own or having a difficult time determining who is or isn't blowing smoke up your butt. Focus! He who fails to plan, plans to fail. Once you get organized, then ask questions about what it is that you are doing. If you are going to build a mild stocker, focus the topic on that. If you want to talk about an exotic plymouth flathead six and just want to bat around a few far out ideas with some other dreamers, start a thread on that. Next time you post, state what your goals are, questions about those goals, and perhaps you won't need to wear a helmet and flack jacket when you open this thread. WX1
Actually Kevin, Although Tesla provided us with the ultimate scientific thinking of the day, He admitted That his thoughts were not his own, and it was well known that he got his "visions" During flashes of light that would plauge him throughout his life. In other words, his strokes of genious were channeled into him from a higher conciousnes. I don't know about einstein though, as I did not know him personally. But one of his lines was " The important thing is not to stop questioning" On that note, you seem to be doing alright.. Don't stop now... Also, you mentioned selling your stock manifolds? That means that It;s time to slow down again. Rave on....
Knock and the door will open seek and ye shall find I am using a custom offy manifold for the intake and making homeade headers with my welder got some prebent nikel plate from a "source" so that is why I'm selling the manis, don't need em and someone else could.... and, I need the cash.
------------------------------ Actually, I'm afraid there's nobody on *either* side of the door he's knocking on, if you get my drift. Mart3406 ==============================
that, my friend is physically impossible. You cannot knock on a door if you aren't there, so there must be at least one person
Sorry to say, but; What if your "Knockin on Heavens' Door"???? Whats goin on then? (Actually I don't need an answer for this one)
Its "Knock, knock, knockin on Heavens' Doe awaaar........Yeeea, yea yea yea". In your best Axle Rose impression.
I've tried to read this thread, not once but twice, and I'm still confused. I haven't figured out if you're after a restoration or a hot rod. Neither can any of the people that have wasted their time trying to help you. As stated many, many pages ago, the car you've picked will NEVER be worth much, so just go out and find yourself a cheap, good running doner car and meld the two into one. Save all the drama, do that, and even you can probably get this car up and running for a song in no time. All you need to do is add your own effort together with the knowledge available on this board mixed in just a little bit of your own ingenuity. Pretty much, if you learned to use the search function, closed this thread, and stopped shooting off your mouth, you'd find all the good ideas needed to help you learn how to put that car together. Some people just like to hear the sound of their own voice, no matter how stupid they make themselves sound to others.
I would just love to throw a slanter in the engine bay, but I like the flathead look. I plan to do very light mods brakes, rear end, possibly suspension. I want to do this right, and I want to do it good. at this point people can just flash forward to the end/lastpage and see what is really up. I am going to stroke the crank, bore the pistons, add a dual intake port the intake/exhaust to the extent that it can be done, header exhaust, gear driven, 12v converted, and put some bigger, but not too big, tires on the back and change the profile a bit. I already have the paint and all I need do is prep and prime, take the seats to the upholstery shop. I will still have to send the steering wheel off, and re-chrome everything. New motor mounts, I'll fabricate the air box "the thing basically disintegrated" from F/G and re-wire the whole car. No Mopar natnl.s for this guy. I'm thinkin smithy's glasspacks for the exhaust but still have time to decide on a good sound. There are of course all of the little things that I will need help from the HAMB for but I think I have a pretty drawn out plan for now. The rebuild obviously will need a lot of consideration, and I will need to find a factory manual or something for the engine torque specs etc. Thanks, Kevin
I'm proud of you Kevin, You've finally got most all of your plans posted in one meaningful paragraph. Bravo!!!!!
I don't understand. You say that the pictures are of the items that the mechanic (machinist) does not need, but the pictures seem to include every single piece of your engine. If the machinist does not need the block, crank, cam, etc. then are you indeed going with a different engine? Please clarify. Also, how are you going to get your camshaft gear driven? If you use two gears only, will they fit? How will you handle the reverse camshaft and distributor rotation? Or are you going to install an idler gear? Is there room for one. With all of the work you have ahead of you it is curious why you are focusing on a gear drive for your basically rebuilt motor (according to the plans you outined in your most recent post). What will the gerar drive provide? Is it a gear whine - perhaps just play an .mp3 of a nice gear whine.
My Mom would call your plans, "shooting yourself in the foot." I'd call your plans, "Kicking yourself in the nuts." Why would you want something fragile and slow just to be different. That "Dare to be diffent" is so worn out it wants to make me puke. Do like most hot rodders do and buy a donor car that you can get all the goodies to make your car run and drive. There is no shame in it, people have been doing it for years. Get you a nice big V-8 and better brakes, charging system ect....... I can't believe this thread is still going. Why do I keep reading it? I must be bored as hell, oh well two more hours and I'll be out in the garage getting my hands dirty. Edit. I just read Twofosho's comments, I guess we think a lot alike.
