So the Fedex guy dropped off a new metal shear and a set of mallets to my home today. I couldn’t wait to give them a try so I headed out to the shop (shed) to see how well they worked. Apparently beating on sheet metal at 11pm in my neighborhood is a bad idea. My wife shut me down, afraid that someone would call the police. She’s right, I know. It just*****s that most of my free time is in the late evening, a time more well suited to quieter hobbies when you live in town. Who else has had to pack it in early when they’d rather be making progress on their project? Boys in blue ever visit you?

  2. Boys in blue live next door and they say F... the neighbors. However, my sweet heart wife shuts be down around 9:00 during the week and midnight on weekends. She keeps me in line.

That's one of the reasons I love livin' in the country. Shoot, the farmers make more noise than I do. Although...you'd be surprised how the sound carries out here after the crops are cut!

That why most of the people that I know with noisy tools, have soundproof rooms. I just have to pick the right time of day to make noise; so I understand.

I will never forget the day dad and i broke in the cam in moms 36 plymoth. They live in a "higher" class neighborhood and people from every street {you know the ones that you never see because they are at the pool or in side with the central air} Just happend to wander by that evening. It was awsome spitting flames and the headers were cherry red. at dusk. WHat a deal

Neighbors can be your best friends or your worst enermies, so treat them with a certain level of respect.

It is a game around here, if I make some noise late or very early once in a while they will be OK with that but if I did it regularly that would tick them off.

The unwritten rule is not early on a Sunday morning.
I also keep them interested in what I am doing so thay kinder know the routine.
Like if I am holidays from work they know there will be a bit more noise than usual and that seems to help them accept it.

I find the heavy bass sound from load music is more annoying than my grinder etc.

This has been covered MANY times. Do a search and all sorts of good ideas are to be found for managing your noise in a residentual area.

my neighbors have to much time on their hands. having a tall fence is the key to most********* but include cameras with audio.

Yeah but hows that little kiddo like the noise? :D

I'm surrounded by horses, long horn steer and roosters. They make more noise than I do.

I do all my late night elbow ordnance with the doors closed.
I told the all neighbors "I like working on cars alot I just work on mine, no-one else s and sometimes I keep weird hours, If I ever wake you up or disturb you please tell me right away and I'll put everything away and treat y'all for dinner anytime, ANYWHERE you want to go".
People are alot more tolerant if they know up front you respect them.

I respect my neighbors enough to knock off loud work after 9 pm or about 2 hours after sundown in the winter. They respect me enough to not wake my**** up in the day when I work nights. I have a nice chat with my neighbors who won't keep their dogs quiet, with my .357 on my hip. Never have any problems...

When I lived in town I had the same problem, If I worked past 10pm during the week 11pm on weekends I'd get a visit from the local PD followed by the code nazis usually the next day. I'm so glad I live in the sticks now I cam make all the noise i want and usually do.

My neighbor has no problem running the leaf blower at night, or skill saw, hammer etc. I talked to him nice but he still does it mostly when I'm having dinner or when the kids are doing their homework. So payback is a******. Please tell me what tool makes the most noise? Maybe a sawsall on heavy metal? I'm going to run it when about the time he puts his kids to bed.

Thats why i dont like my neighbors being on top of me. Ive had that problem one time. I lived in an apartment building and was trying to swap out a*******. Apartment manager come over complaining. I had to tow it to my dads to finnish it. I lived there about 3 years and that was 15 years ago. Just bought a house and made sure there wouldnt be a problem. Ive got 2 acres and no close neighbors.

My wife gives me a harder time than the neighbors, our garage is attached to the house. So I try to stop about 9pm or earlier to give her a break. F%@$ the neighbors, they're out there running their leaf blowers and sidewalk edgers at 7am on saturday morning!:D

  24. yup, have to be respectful of the neighbors.
I have a small shop built in my backyard, big upright compressor etc etc etc, I installed noise barriers to help direct the noise where I wanted it to go.

I think it's just a matter of having respect for your neighbor's right to a little peace and quiet. In general I stop making noise after 10:00pm. Hardly ever get going before 7-8:00 in the morning.
If you try to schedule your noise making work before 10:00pm and do the quiet stuff after that, and maybe with the doors shut if it's questionable? No point in getting too familiar with the cops, if you know what I mean?
I have worked through the night a few times, and it hasn't been an issue but it's 200+ feet to my nearest neighbor's house. Sound does travel in the quiet times of the night!

    Thanks for the comments guys,
I don’t want to give anyone the impression that I don’t respect my neighbors. Most of them are really nice, and none of them discharge firearms or rev leaf blowers before eight on Sunday morning. Heading out at 11pm to bang on stuff really isn’t the norm for me either, but I sure wish it could be. I’m hoping to build a small shop in the next year or so, and ultimately (maybe not realistically) I’d like to be out there at anytime day or night as I have time. I think just about anyone here would much rather work on a patch panel then sit and watch television. Maybe I’ll build a bunker style garage… If you'd seen my wife standing in the doorway in her jammies…..sorry honey ;)

Here we have a noise ordinance that outlaws excessive noise from 10PM-8AM.
BUT the disturbing the peace ordinance can and is used to stop obsessive offenders during the 8AM-10PM too. Most neighbors here are not totally oblivious to others rights but it happens.
It isn't bad in our old neighborhood but the newer ones have Home Owners****ociations and many won't even allow any maintenance except car washing to be done outside the garage, and yes in many cases the door must be closed too.

We have a 11pm noise curfew, i usually move on to something that is quiet when it gets close to that time so i dont piss off the neighbors.

I still cant believe the law hasn't showed up at my place. I asked one of my neighbors if I was too loud............ he just looked at me and didn't say anything. So I shut the loud stuff down around 10pm now.
