Great place, just keep the curtains closed and put plenty of locks on the place. I'd hate to see you lose any of the goodies you have.

For the time being I keep a little space heater in there set at 45 degrees, and I only turn the well pump on when I am there, so I can keep a eye on everything.

One guy I know fill his walls with vermiculite. Keeps it warmer.
The downside is if you drill into the block it will flow out.

I'd insulate it just like a basement: build a wall just inside the block and insulate that. A place like that, though, I wouldn't use boring old drywall inside, it calls for something cool like galvanized, corrugated steel or old road signs or something.

PS Has the Garage Journal seen this yet?

  16. is there a large container of fuel underground ?

i see the fuel oil tank out front that will become a pig roaster ... right?

the radiant heat is the way to go and remember moving air is makin heat as it moves with a system like that.

just keep the doors to the shop sealed for fumes and dust

i found used slat wall at auction from a closed clothing store .. i had to remove it but got 50 4x8 sheets for a buck a sheet more than enough for my 26 x60 shop watch for that kinda stuff

i would think some foil backed foam would help your heat loss problem ceiling walls and floors espieeally in areas wher cars won't be drivin on em !
check some resturant auctions for cheap tables and storage

its great fun redoing a place to make it yours .. insure it too.
    good luck

i may know of a pegasas

Well, I see that your old thread has been revived. I was thinking the other day that a trip up to see you might be in order. However, until you get heat in that old vault a better idea would be for you to organize a breakfast down here and a trip over to that "place" we talked about (hint, hint).

Glad to see updates on this thread! I hope to do the same thing some day. That 1930's auto shop thread among others, and yours, has been inspiration and feeding me ideas on how to replicate one. I just wish I had the cars too. Keep it up!

Your shop is pretty cool and I can appreciate the old buildings. My shop is located in an old car dealership that was built in the 50's from what i know about it. It was among other things an American Motors and Jeep dealership back in the day. I have my project in what was the body shop. I also use that room to work on motorcycles as the ceiling is too low for automotive repair. In the main shop I have 3 more hoists and a midrise hoist. What was the parts room now serves as our tire bay as well as storage. The in ground hoists are long gone and I have the newer style twin hoists. The infloor hoist are a problem. They were replaced with above ground hoist because of oil containimation. I would get that thing out of the ground as you don't want that thing leaking oil into the ground because you would have a problem with the DEQ for sure.
When you insulate, try to insulate while keeping the character of the place intact. I hope you are able to fing the signage that you are looking for. If I ever see any Mobil signage,I will keep you in mind and turn it your way.
