Anybody rebuild vintage heater blower motors?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 38fordpickup, Jan 19, 2010.

  1. Does anybody rebuild vintage heater blower motors? Henrietta the '38 Ford pickup has a '30s vintage Hot Wave brand aftermarket accessory heater that looks very nice and puts out good heat, but the blower motor is about to give up the ghost. It will start off running strong for a minute or two, then run real slow a couple of minutes before quitting altogether. I've looked for other small 12V motors I can make work but haven't found anything. The motor is relatively small as blower motors go and has a long shaft that mounts both a squirrel cage for the defroster and a blade type fan for the heater. The housing for the squirrel cage appears to be made integral with the motor housing. It's a 6V motor that's been running on a 12V system, using the old rheostat type heater switch as a voltage reducer. Since I haven't had any luck finding a 12V motor that will fit this heater, I'm wondering if there's somebody out there who can put the motor I have back in good working condition and change it to 12V in the process. Or, if anybody knows of a small 12V blower motor that could be made to work, that would be good and probably a lot cheaper than rebuilding the motor I have.

This would be easy if I only needed a small 12V motor to turn a blade type fan. I really want to keep the squirrel cage blower for the defroster as well as the fan for the heater.

computer fan motors are small and come in 12 volt, yhey don't move a lot of air but will work in a small vehicle.

  3. I looked at some small motors like computer fan motors and defroster fan motors for refrigerators, both have the same two problems, they don't move a big enough volume of air, and there's no way to use them with the squirrel cage blower for the defroster.

Take what you have into a good auto parts store and show them you need a 12 volt model. It is suprising what you might find in parts catalogs.

Check the yellow pages for "auto electric" and ask if they can do it.

Check out "Mill supply" on the internet.
They sell parts for step vans, sounds odd but parts are very basic.
    They have window regulators too.

actually some of them do move quite a lot of air, look for server grade components, though they are noisy.

I have the same issue with my Bus. It has 3 motors in the Evans unit. I am going to talk to a local electric motor rebuilder to see if they can make them into 12v or find suitable replacements. I will let you know what I find out. Any way I was told it NEVER gets that cold here in GA. Right. LOL

NAPA had/I hope still has a catalog of just heater parts. The section on blower motors has an excellent chart showing dimensions, type of shaft, rotation, etc. There are even some reversible ones as needed on some elderly heater/defrosters. Go find a NAPA that still has someone literate at the counter!

    Yes.

I have a heater with the squirrel cage/fan combination and I found an identical 12V replacement for my old heater this way. Just had to shorten the shaft around 1/4" and it was a direct bolt in.

Pretty sure you can get dimensions online.
