How do you really feel?

I went a few years ago. Surprisingly, just going as a spectator still gets you just about as much access as any bidder, and even the prices of food/drinks weren't too bad! I had a good time, saw a lot of cool cars, and even saw myself on tv when I got home. Why people get so worked-up about Barrett-Jackson, I don't get it. I'd never overpay for a car there, but I've got a few ideas on some cars I'll be buying and taking there in the next few years to put a little cash in my pocket!

 

Some cool cars, But I really cant stomach how much stupid money is out there unless its in my pocket.

that the TOP MONEY #1 vehicle for Tuesday night was a 1932 Ford 3W coupe

 

There should be more recognition for the builders, craftsmen, and restorers! Always been in doubt of the phone bidder when a car is not bringing what they want. Hmm....... What about the amphibious cars... who would want one, can't imagine being out in the bay and seeing one sputtering along and the driver with a captains hat on....wheeeee! I would probably get a hoot watching the people if I went. However there are a lot of nice cars that go up for auction. No doubt, it is an event defined by money.

 

Don Tognotti's AMBR winner from the 60's will be up for grabs on Saturday. Oldest roadster to win the AMBR. Think it is a 1913. Awesome car. Interesting to see what an AMBR car will go for. Bumongous, the custom Buick from about 10 years ago didn't pull much money. Most of the cars didn't pull any real money. The big block 4 speed SS 70 Chevelle only took in about 45 thou. They were pulling 100 thou a few years ago. Prices appear to be really down. The 32 3 window was even cheap at 75 thou. I am sure that car had double that in it. Pat.

 

Right at the end of the telecast tonight ,the anouncer said that they were sending drivers outside to pull some of the cars up out of the water in the lower parking areas.

 

That '32 3Window looked real nice, didn't get any details on it, just saw it at the end of tonights coverage. Brookville or real? The Tognotti King T was listed as a 1914 on the AMT model don't know if they listed it as a '14 at other times. In fact it is a 1915 body with 1914 style flat top fenders. Every car I watched tonight sold for less than I thought it would, and I know that was under the build cost in most cases.

 

I watched it. Prices were off.

But I really want to know who that Blonde Chick is that buys a shit load of cars???

Is she related to Ron Pratt.

She even bought the breast cancer charity camaro for 245,000. On top of the but load of cars that she already bought.

 

The rare cars with papers still go up. For example a 1970 camaro Z-28 with papers $45,000...I sold mine about 7 years ago for $16,000, and i thought I was doing well. Another was a 48 Chevy 6 cyl. mint restored pickup $38K.

I was surprised that none of the TV experts knew what an exhaust train whistle was on the early T! Maybe it takes an Old Fart to know that stuff.

They made a big deal about Amato buying a cheep pickup, but no one mentined his side kick, Marty "the one man party". Maybe it takes an old East Coast drag racer the recognise him.

 

Keep in mind that this was only the first day. None of the cars sold last night were the quality that you will see by Saturday. The cars get better and the bids go up as the week progresses.

I too don't understand the Barrett-Jackson bashing. It's a free car show on TV every night. I couldn't care less what people pay or why they buy what they buy, or what they do with the cars after they buy them, or Steve Davis, or the screaming bidder's assistant, or any of that.

I just like looking at the cars. You will see cars on there that you can't see anywhere else.

The only part of the show I don't like is the idiot camera man on the stage who seems to think he can never stop zooming that damn camera all over the place and keeps giving us close-ups of the tires, and door handles and such. I wish he would just stand back and hold still and let us see the whole car!

 

Do you think there's an 8% sellers fee and an 8% buyers fee both on umbrellas?

I love seeing the cars, but I do hate the fact that the Barrett-Jackson effect is real and makes people think every old hunk of sheet metal in the back yard is worth big bucks!

 

I'll be watching it whenever I get a chance. Probably all day Friday to get me ready for Saturday when I actually go there.

It’s not just BJ. It’s every car collector auction anywhere. I’d like to own a 36 – 48 Ford Woodie. A few years ago, you could get them on used car lots for 500 bucks, and there were decent beaters out there for next to nothing. Now, there isn’t a decent beater to be found because the auctions have driven the prices well into six figures, and people have spent that much restoring them thinking they are all going to be worth that much or more. Those that are still out there that haven’t been restored are owned by hoarders who keep them stashed in order to inflate the prices on their restored museum pieces

There are few guys like Sawzall who seem to be able to buck the trend, but not many. He has been able to take real junk and turn it into something without breaking the bank, and as a result of the high prices for the restored cars at auctions, he’ll probably be able to make a profit on what he builds. How many of us can say that

I don't take the B-J effect too seriously. When a "tire-kicker", "stroke", or somebody "fishing" to sell their vehicle mentions the values at B-J, I just tune them out and move on to the next person.

I am afraid we have let the B-J effect "affect" us more than it really should.

Ignore the ignorant is my motto.

Some serious bargains yesterday. If you know what you are doing, it is a great place to buy a car, enjoy it, and make a hell of a lot better than what CD's are paying, when it appreciates. You make money when you buy, not when you sell. Knowledge of the market, whatever the product, is paramount.

 

I love the Barrett Jackson. Its deffinatley damaged the hobby, but only as far as you let it. I had a dude "offer" to sell me his 65 impala that was BURNED for 3k.It was rare 327 and 2 speed inna 4 door,because I heard I was into old cars. When I got done splainin him reality I got it for $50.00.
Besides, Its the Superbowl equivalent party at my house.

Steve "Magneto" Magnante is more my style. I could listen to him talk about cars all night long.

 

IMO, the first year or two, the TV coverage was entertaining, but now it's just really boring.

Now, the only thing I find even mildly interesting is Steve Magnante's undying car knowledge. The guy is truly a walking automotive encyclopedia.

Also, I believe that a lot of the absurd bidding isn't even about the cars in some cases, it's about the rich guy's egos. I'd say that you could auction ice cream sandwiches in a room full of egotistical rich guys, and things would get just as silly.

I think that fully restored 60 Caddy that went for 21,000 was a good deal. Even had the caddy wires on it I think.

A lot of these so called bargains ( and some of the overpriced stuff too) are nightmares underneath the glitz, shiny paint and bling. You might be amazed at some of the horror stories. You cannot do a full inspection at the auction before you bid so it's a crap shoot.
